Alright so I want to try this with a cheaper knife first to see how it does but i know I want to buy the paint from http://glowinc.com/detail.aspx?ID=41
I've seen several knives on the forums that had glow in the dark handles etc but nobody really explained how to do it. I was wondering if you guys could tell me the simplest and most effective method for painting the handle, liners etc and what kind i should use, and how i should go about it (step by step if possible) thanks

I've seen a few knife scales done with glow in the dark G-10. Usually these are used as decorative liners and pinning material. From what I read, the phosphorescent material is mixed into the resin when the G-10 is made. So it's not a paint, the material is incorporated into the scale. There are a few places you can buy sheets of glow in the dark G-10.

Any sort of paint would chip off and scratch too easily for my liking.

can you give me links to where you could get glowing g-10?
and I wasnt gonna put it in any rubbing spots I was only gonna put it on the liners really. thanks

Glowinc definitely has some of the best glow powder out. I highly recommend it.

Use Devcon 5-minute epoxy. http://www.amazon.com/ITW-20845-Devcon-Strength-5-minute/dp/B001QFGTHG That's the clearest, easily available epoxy you'll find at your local hardware store. Mix some glow into the epoxy, then apply to where you want it. You can find more info at Glowinc's own forums: http://www.glowforum.com/ and also at candlepower forums http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=97959&referrerid=1659

I went and did some more reading on it. It looks like they actually used GITD homemade micarta and used that in combination with translucent G-10. So the light shines through the G-10. My mistake I thought the G-10 was GITD. I guess you'll have to do the micarta yourself.

Mixing the glow powder in epoxy, as Splat said, is the way to do it. Rather than dab it on, drill holes in the scales and fill the holes with the mixture.

I had some problem with trying to pre mix the epoxy and powder. It kept settling out to the bottom too quickly. I've actually found the best way to do it is to just put the epoxy in the hole first (about 2/3 full), then add the powder. Poking it in with a toothpick will soak and sink it. I could get a real high density of powder in it that way. It was also less wasteful of the powder, 100% went into the accents. I was using a high viscosity, long pot life epoxy, so I don't know how the Devcon would work. Do a little experimenting first.

I've done that too, and it does work well.

FWIW, if you want ultimate clear than get Norland's Opitcal Adhesive 61. It's not cheap and isn't too easy to get, but it's the clearest stuff. I wish I had pics of my torch that I had done but trust me, the Devcon's good enough.

i do quite a bit of GITD work on scales and such. I have my GITD powder material made to my spec's but you can get something close enough from GlowInc. BUT, don't get the paint, get the V10 powder. Also, i use commercial structural carbon fiber resin to set the powder up in, there's a huge minimum order of the stuff i use, but a very nice resin for this is made by System III. it's self degassing, UV resistant, and waterproof (among other things). they use it to coat surf boards with, and it's durable stuff, you can machine it, grind it, and get different hardeners for different applications. i used to use it before i found the stuff i use now with great results. it's here:

http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/SB-112-c12.htm

you'll have to play around with the mixture a bit to see what you like, but it's not difficult. i've done TONS of these things and like anything else it gets easier the more you do it.

you think you'd be able to do one or two for me? I'm not sure what yet.
