Glowtraser durability.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced what I have with a Glowtraser keyring...mine is split open and not glowing anymore.

I have dropped my set of keys several times and it seems that the cheap clear plastic that envelopes the glow stick just pops apart. Is there a more durable version or a way to avoid this in the future (besides not dropping my keys)?

And if anyone still has a lead to get some more green ones let me know.

I haven't experienced any such. I've been moderately rough with mine--no problems, so far.

Can some one provide a link to information /picture of one of these? It has been mentioned here before, however I cannot find information on Google. Thank you-

Two things come to mind - superglue or clear shrink tubing as used in electronics.

Superglue bonds the pieces together tightly enough that they wouldn't be so easily broken apart. If you shrink a piece of clear shrink tubing over the Glowring it would provide a bit of padding so impact wouldn't be directly on the plastic, mechanically hold the pieces together, and allow most of the light to still emit through the tubing.

Hi guys,

I received the following message from Traser upon my (our) questions about breakage of the Glowtubes that can happen sometimes:

"I have had discussions with the case manufacture of the glowrings and it may be that we will make the split ring end thicker so as to make the product slightly more solid.

This should, reduce the problems considerably. However, with regards to the tubes inside, please bare in mind that they are quite delicate as well as being pressurised. Because the glowrings are used on a keyring, It would be impossible for us to to guarantee against breakage. If think about it, watch guarantees do not cover
glass against breakage either !"

I already heard that they would experiment with a little silicon glue to fixate the glowtube in the channel inside the Glowring keychain as was suggested by one of our Forumites.

In my view the whole "problem" of breaking Glowtubes is caused by the fact that the channel holding the Glowtube inside the 2 clear keychain halves is a little longer then the Glowtube itself and this can cause small movements (just shake carefully and you'll even hear the Glowtube moving up/down in the channel).

Of all the Glowrings we have in our familly and Scouting group only a few had the glass glowtube break.
If I would need to make a guess as to what the breakage % of the new model Glowrings is after using it for a while I would guess about .5 %to 1 %.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

I was thinking about the clear shrink wrap tubing myself. That should be fine.

I think the glass tube can be made more durable. I'd be willing to pay for a slight increase in cost since it could last almost as long as the glow stick itself.

I have keyfobs made from clear plastic and they don't crack or split over the years; the plastic sandwiches other objects in the center much like the glowtrasers.

Thanks for the replies!

Burton, thank you for the links! They are essentially tritium mini glow sticks, it appears- interesting.
Thank you again-
