Hey guys and gals, I have made a few sheaths now and I was kinda proud of the outcome. Then I got one of them a little wet and the dye bled out horribly. My questions are;

What is a good dye that won't bleed? Or what to do after I dye it to keep it from bleeding?

And What kinds of glue are people using?

If you have seen my reviews on the Busse forum, you know my knives are hard users. My sheaths need to be that as well. Any advice is truly welcome.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Glue- Barge contact cement

Dye- Fiebings dyes are great, I just used their Pro Oil dye in Black and its fantastic!

Since your knives are hard users, maybe see about doing a finish of Montana Pitch Blend or Sno-Seal.

I will try that for sure. I may have to redo the finishes. I don't really care if it looks bad, in the sense that I am probably going to have someone make a sheath for my FBM. Otherwise I will just keep telling myself it is like custom cammo or something like that.

Glue....I've been using Dap WeldWood for a few years now..gel formula.

It's contact cement and pretty inexpensive at Lowes or Home Depot. Works great.:thumbup:

I've heard that the Dap WeldWood works pretty good. I got my blue tube of Barge at Hobby Lobby with a 40%off coupon :)

Johnny,First of all thanks for your service to this country!! Dap Weldwood,as mentioned above, is good. I have always used Barge and never had a problem. Used right , they both work well. Trav

Now, a wrench in the leather bending question..

Which dyes for the edges of the sheath? For Brown/light brown sheaths it seems that makers use a darker almost coating like brown.

Some do....I used to....now days I just use the same dye as the rest of the work is done in.

It is not really a dye for the edges but the product is called edge coat. Comes in black.

I use the same type of dye for the edges as the sheath or a contrasting colour, then finish with Gum Trag. The Fiebings oil dye doesn't bleed or at least not like the spirit dyes.

Best regards

Robin
