hey

does anyone use the new gmail by google? I want to use it, but as i understand as it is still in beta it is by invitation by current users only. If anyone has an extra invitation i would greatly appreciate it if you could send one my way. my email adress is lbobbitt513@yahoo.com

yes, can I have two separate ones? I'd like one personal and one business

I did the same thing, I have 3 accounts actually...One business/sign-ups, gaming and informal business and my forum one, it seems to work very well...But yes 1000 megs of space is quite good, I don't really like how they are saying it's a gig when it is 24 megs short...

What is gmail anyway? I keep hearing people referring to it but I have no idea what it is or how it's different from e-mail.

Gmail is Google's free email service. It's like Hotmail, but without the long load times, and with more storage space.

Incidentally, I received a link to an article today suggesting that Google is probably about 6 months out from starting their own IM service.

Well, it can be easier, but I know that my dad is always sitting at the computer, and several of my friends are, and sometimes just telling them something short is easier to do via IM than phone. You can also do file transfers that are too large to attach to an email (like unshrunk photos from a digital camera), send links to interesting sites or articles, and if you have the right setup, you can even do "voice chat" which is like a phone conversation, but without having to pay long distance charges. Another thing you can do with IM is add several people to a conversation, which allows me to (say) have an IM chat with my mom in Texas, my brother in Oregon, and anyone else I want to add to the list, all at the same time. Kind of like a private chat room.

I've found that I keep in closer contact with folks that also use IM programs just because every time they get on their computer, I see them and can say "Hi". It's not like making a long distance call where you worry about mealtimes, or if they are busy, or if they are even home. You know they're home, in front of their computer, and you don't have to take up much of their time to just pass a few sentences back and forth. Sure, it doesn't take the place of having an actual voice conversation with a loved one, but it has its advantages.

No, I don't think so. That's a different technology, and it can cost more. I've been online and had someone IM, and we carry on that conversation, maybe with interrruptions, while I'm still working whatever website I was on. I guess it's like a private chat.

And I can still listen to the radio without it interfering with my hearing!

I guys

Anybody else got an invitation to Gmail they wouldn't mind sending me?

I lost my other e-mail address when i got rid of AOL (Always Off Line) and changed to Outlook Express.

I would really appreciate it!
