It's Google's free email service. Right now it's in beta testing, so the only way to get an account is to be invited. Every account gets six invitations, so getting one isn't difficult.
The cool thing about Gmail is that you get 1 GIGABYTE of storage... meaning you never delete anything, just "archive" and then you can Google search to find the email you're after. I've been using it for a couple months now, and it's awesome.
