Went for a good hike this morning at a nearby state park. About 10 o'clock, I heard what I thought was a gobble. Told my hiking buddy, but I didn't get a bead on location, and we shrugged it off. About a mile down the trail, we saw this band of brothers. 19 turkeys. All of them mature toms. Not a hen or jake in sight. They just sort of ambled alongside us about 30 yards off the trail. No doubt enjoying their protected status and used to people hiking through there.

We also saw six does zip across the trail about 50 yards in front of us. Beautiful day and some nice time outdoors.

Note: Here is some BECKER content. These are special turkey hunting knives.

So do you just jingle jangle carrying all that metal, are turkeys attracted to that sound?

;)

Pavlovian conditioning. I failed to mention the 50 pounds of cracked corn in my pack, didn't I? :D :p

I know you're a beckerhead but I gotta say that collection is sick. B E A utiful. Oh maybe someday.

Now you've done it....you're encouraging him to show off his collection.

Go ahead Guyon......show the mother load.

excellent Becker oriented post with added turkeys :)

I have never seen a turkey in the wild.:grumpy:

Also none of my Turkey hunting knives came with those cool grips, WTF....

Thats one sweet collection

I think they sent me the fishing knives on accident

It's funny how used to people some of them get. Today's birds seemed pretty undisturbed by my presence, and I walked over as close as I could easily get (there was an old hogwire fence between us). I've also been really close to them while kayaking at a lake near today's site (probably the same flock) and while playing at a local golf course.

Hunting them? One blink and they can be gone, gone in a hurry. I've had a little success here and there though. In this picture, I'm sure there's a Becker somewhere in a pocket. ;)

My friend Jeremy Horton took this picture (well, it's actually two pictures I spliced together) looking down from his dad's house. I've seen this flock with my own eyes.

Side note: A group of turkeys is actually called a rafter, but I can never bring myself to use that terminology. Flock for me please.

i think they're spelling out a word ... "shoot me!" that's it!

We see some pretty large "rafters" (flocks!) of turkeys in Quantico's backwoods ... also in the PW Forest Park ... but this one may have them beat.

My friend sent me a few pics. Here's how close I got to the birds.

And thanks in advance for all the compliments on my ass.

Them Toms can get aggressive when they get together.

We had 8 of them that would hang out by our home, and would chase the kids or any unsuspecting person. They even chased after cars..

I went out there one day to get chased. I would get close and they would just stand their ground and gobble, but as soon as I turned my back to them, they came at me. One got too close....

I never eaten Wild Turkey breast before that. I may have over cooked it but it was kind of tuff...
