I plan on fireworks in the forge room during the day and real fireworks out in the back field tonight. Happy 4th all!

Today is one of the most important Holidays of our Nation, so it is time to remember ... "4TH OF JULY"

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his Ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while preparing to enjoy your 4th of July holiday and thank those patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

P.S. Please fly your flags for the troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and all other places where they are still in harms way. Have a safe and enjoyable Fourth.

Golok, thanks and that is a very good point. Seems like many politicians these days don't even bother to give the Constitution lip service. Every one of them has some agenda item directly counter to the Bill of Rights. If we'd just take a step back and remember the wisdom the Founders applied in putting our great country together we'd be a lot better off. Much of the world hates America because of its apparent greed and consumption, and I can hope that perhaps this ugly part of our history is coming to a close.

I heard this morning the SEC cannot hire enough investigators to handle all the fraud cases it has to manage... I think this must be because regular people have had enough of corporate greed. Now if we could just get all the wealthy special interests out of Washington we'd have it on the upswing... Let's hope the campaign contribution laws start to bring that around too.

I'm a life member of NRA, but I would rather see them working through education than buying votes. Just my opinion, I may get flamed for that but it's what I believe.

Anyway, today is a great day to appreciate the sacrifices of the Founders and of the brave soldiers who gave all to support our way of life. Let's hold our heads high and show the world America is the great country we say it is.

There's been many a person give the ultimate price, for the great freedoms and privileges, we all have the opportunity to share today. Freedom has not been cheap to obtain, or to hold on to.
I salute with tear in eye, all those that have given so much. Some from sadness, that so many have died so young, but mostly with great pride, because they were willing to fight to make and keep us FREE.
