I was wondering if my new Gray Goddard would be considered a good choice for a self defense folder?
If so, would the combo edge, or plain edge be pefered???

Thanks

I always thought that knife would be a great defensive folder. Great blade shape, forward finger protection, secure handle. I'd stick with plain edge and sharpen it mercilessly, but would express some mild skepticism that the edge type you chose would actually have any appreciable difference on your ability to survive a confrontation :) Pick what you like.

It would certainly work. It's a good no-nonsense design with a reliable lock and ease of one handed opening. I myself have carried Enduras for a number of years for SD and still consider the Endura "the bar" for tactical folders.

The edge debate is old, here's my take:

I prefer plain edge. It's much easier to maintain and better for most types of cutting in my experience.

I do not believe that serrations will scare anyone.

Some people point out that serrations will aid in using the knife as a control implement. My opinion is that this will only work if the blade is made for such e.g. the Matriarch or Civilian. I do agree that serrations will make a quick and nasty cut on bare flesh but there's the argument that they will snag and break if caught on a button, zipper, etc.

I hate combo edge. I can see why it's potentially useful and I do have a CE or two but it's like having both PE and SE and getting the benefit of neither one.

And then a lot of people just don't care. They may be the wisest of all. :D

If you can carry it (and use it) legally and if it buys you time to run in a life or death situation it'll do.
