Looking for thoughts, impressions on this knife. I've ordered one from SMKW (plain edge is on closeout for $29.99) and am a bit curious what to expect.

Any Goddard fans out there?

HI...I have 2 of the plainedge models(lost one, bought another, found the first one). I carry them all the time. It is kind of Spyderco, pardon the expression, Buck 110 type knife(but better). The handles gives a great grip and the blade has a lot of belly. I may have to call SMKW and order another, I hear it is discontinued.

Hey, Guyon, thanks for the heads up on the great online price for a Goddard. I ordered mine last night! It'll be my first knife in one of the finer steels. Prior to this, my best has been a Delica combination edge in AUS8. Frankly, it's done everything I've asked of it. But I've long liked the looks of the Goddard and obviously read great things about the better steel. I can't wait.

Thanks for the responses people. I'm really looking forward to getting the knife now.

mnblade: You should really like the ATS-55 steel. I have it in the Standard, the Rookie, and the CF Ladybug. It gets razor sharp and holds that edge nicely.

A few people have emailed me and asked about contact information for SMKW. I put all that info in a previous post entitled "Good Deals on Spydercos." Enjoy.

Actually I live just a couple blocks away from Wayne and I bought my Spyderco Goddard directly from him. That design was one that he had developed around 20 years ago, and at the time was one of his most popular folders. If I remember right he called it "Odin's Claw".

Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but I have always considered the Spydie version one of the most useful all around blades in my collection. I think the Goddard is right up there with the Military and Endura for ergonomics, tactical and utility use.

I almost bought a second one from Wayne and Phyllis at the OKCA winter show in November. It was a plain edge and was priced at, I believe, $45. But I held off for some reason and I'm kinda' glad I did. When I opened the SMKW and found that $30 price I could hardly contain myself. Just as I sat down at my keyboard this morning I gave them a call and ordered one.

The last time I talked with Wayne we discussed the possibility of serrating my original one that had the 50/50 edge. He said he could do it, but that he preferred to start with a straight edge. I've never actually cared much for the 50/50 edge, so I'll probably have him finish serrating that one.

All you need is love... a sharp blade and a full clip

Alright, Guyon!

I want you to know that you forced (

) me to call up SMKW and order one. I really wanted one, but didn't find any plain edge at the $40.00 price point Jim March talked about in his thread on this knife. It'll be my second Spydie. I'll probably like this one a lot more than my Endura II.

It's times like this, I almost wish I used credit cards. Oh well if I miss this deal, there's always gun & knife shows. RKBA!

Well, I got the Goddard today, and I couldn't be more pleased. The rather large blade has a nice belly and got scary sharp after a few passes on the 204. Locks up tight with no discernable blade play. Carries comfortably with the pocket clip (which is reversable). The handle is light and comfortable--though it is better suited for larger hands. This fact has to do in part with the handle's size, but it also involves the arc of the blade when opening. I do like the way the handle curves to protect the index finger. The knife fits my grip just fine, and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'm going turkey hunting on Saturday (weather permitting), and the Goddard LW is already in the gear bag.

Got mine yesterday afternoon.
First impression: "Christ almighty, this thing is big!" :-0
Second impression: "Holy moly, this thing is big!" :-o
Third impression: "Well, uhh, it doesn't weigh much, but this thing is DAMN big." :-(
Fourth impression: Anyone wanna trade their plain-edge Endura? Plain-edge Jess Horn? Plain-edge Pro Grip Lightweight? I'm serious.

I just got my goddard also. Plain edge from SMKW. Man, this thing is mighty large. I am very appreciative of its great design. I am really thinking of getting an endura for my right pocket and moving the goddard to the left. I love the thin design and tight lockup! Why were these discontinued? The FRN handles are great, they give a nice utilitarian look and feel while maintaining a high quality feel.

Well, I got mine today. Just like my Delica II stainless, hair poppin' sharp out of the box. The handle material is very light, and feels very good, not slippery at all, and the pattern in the handle material increases the gripping. Excellent blade pattern with just enough belly. Sal, I'd really hate to see this type of design go away! It's light enough for edc, and fits my hand! Small blades are ok, but I hate having my little finger just dangling off the handle! If there was to be a "new and improved" version, about the only thing I would do is use screws for the blade pivot and lock pin. That way I could really clean it up after a day's usage.

Ordered 2 Goddard Lightweights today at the SMKW site and noticed that all the Standard Plain Blades are sold out. (Some Rookies are all gone too).
I'm just guessing, but those Goddards may not last too much longer.

For once, my timing was right. I ordered last night. I don't quite understand BladeWalker's comment about the plain edge being sold out. Have been watching since the original post in this thread, or before, and have only seen the plain edge.

Anyhow, checked this morning, and still had some, checked early afternoon, and the out of stock disclaimer had been added. Under the gun!

Ever since my sort of brouhaha with Jim March over his open letter to CRKT, haven't been able to stop wondering about this knife. And, since I've gotten 2 other Spydies and like them, am very glad will get this one. I flat want a left-handed/ambidextrous knife for my weak-side front pocket. Now, I soon will. Since my primary carries are the KFF and the M16-14, I don't think it will seem too big to me.

Happy days,

Wow, you just made it! What I meant to say was they ran out of the 'Standard' in plain edge. When you search on 'Spyderco', they list out about 5 models. They had Standards (plain edge) in stock, I was going to pick up a spare, but missed my chance. Got BIG blade instead!

Mine came in this morning (that was fast).
These blades are SHARP!
I gave one to a friend (birthday) this afternoon and sent 5 minutes warning him how sharp the blade was, suddenly he lifted up to his face and started shaving! (Dry).
I couldn't believe it and asked him to stop!

He is used to working with very sharp kitchen
knifes, so I'm not too worried about his fingers..

It doesn't feel very heavy for it's size. The feel is somthing like my old SOG Autoclip.
It's large looking, but the blade is under
4 inches, so I guess I can take on a plane..
It's a bit thinner than my Standard..
Nice and flat in the pocket.
Side-by-side, makes my standard look tiny!

It's a nice handling knife and feels very
solid and well made.

The blade is a too little tight for the one
handed close, but otherwise it's perfect.

I can't order mine till end of week (cash flow) I hope they have two left

Got mine yesterday, and am fairly pleased thus far. I guess I've just been real lucky, but this is the first new knife I've ever bought which has just a trace of blade play. None of my CRKTs do yet, however many times I've flipped or flicked them. Aside from that, like it a lot.

I discovered that my right thumb is significantly stronger than my left. About a half second later decided the cut was deep enough to warrant a bandaid.

It is bigger than I expected, but still smaller than my M16. Weighs a lot less, too. Had decided a couple months ago to go with a smaller knife in my left pocket so as not to alarm sheeple when a need for a knife arose. Well, the Goddard is less frightening looking than the M16. Let's hope it is perceived as benign. (My LUS has made holes at the bottom of the handle on all my jeans pockets.

It was with great pleasure that I took a shiny new Canadian penny and removed the clip and reinstalled it on the other side. A minute or so of my time, and I had a bonified left handed knife for my offside pocket. Don't know if Spyderco has a patent on that, but can't believe other manufacturers aren't following in droves. It is seldom that one encounters something so simple and so elegant a solution to a problem. Course the hole made it all possible.

Happy Days,
