Goes dull in pocket

Anyone else have a knife that not only will it not hold an edge, but one that goes dull in your pocket without even using it?

Personally, I have a Gerber LST that will do that. I can sharpen it, and put in my dresser drawer, and come back in a couple of weeks, and it is dull.

Of course it goes without saying that actualling using it dulls it in a hurry too!

Knzn,
I have had 2 LSTs over the last 20 years and I think
it is a great knife for the money.
Mine takes a razor edge and holds it "reasonably" well.
It sounds like you got a bad one.
I did however, once have a Gerber Pixie that I sharpened for years
and never got an acceptable edge.

Any knife of mine that does that immediately sees duty as a throwing knife.
In the trash mostly.
But not before I test it out as a real thrower against the oak tree in my backyard.

A knife that goes dull in you pocket or dresser drawer? Have you considered some form of psychosis or sleepwalking where you us the knife and don't remember? (smiley face here) But you're right, some knives are like that.

Why do some knifes just get dull like that? I have a knife that does it too. It drives me crazy. I have tried sharpening it all kinds of different ways. I even reprofiled the edge. I can make it sharp enough to shave hair, and you dont even feel the hair come off. It just gets dull sitting in the drawer.

The problem is real. Steels like O-1 and 1095 do this all the time, especially in areas with high humidity. I actually had to move the entire line of Spec Plus, and a few others, inside (in the AC) to help prevent this. I am in Florida and just minutes from the ocean.

Your problem is not uncommon.

I've heard other's complain about the Gerber A/F Combat knife, and I think I have to agree...I like to think that Im pretty good at putting an edge on a knife, but this one just about made me want to cry, I even made the mistake to try to sharpen the false edge on it...I felt like taking a hammer to it! It was a lot easier taking it off, I can tell you that!

I had to get rid of my Stiff Kiss for this very reason.I could get that knife soooo sharp but just carrying it in the sheath all day would somehow dull the edge completely.Man that would be a cool knife in decent steel.

Aw Mike,

You ARE part of THE CONSPIRACY!

We've been tracking these things for years. They're small, elusive, BUT REAL! They sneak up to your knives at night and lick at the edges with their hard raspy little red tongues and dull the daylights out of them.

Some knife companies, like Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. have been paying them off with live gerbils hung by their rear legs from persimmon trees on moonless nights (these little things love gerbils). But other companies, like Gerber, Spec Plus, and a bunch of 'em from China, haven't given in.

Why do you think those other knives cost so much? The steel and workmanship?! Come on man! We're paying for all those gerbils, for crying out loud!

Just thought I'd better jump in and set the record straight.

Just when I thought I heard it all Mike! O1 going dull in my pocket. Thank God Mad Dog didnt make any folders!!!!! I bet Randall Knives has a hell of a time Resharpening those 01 Blades every day or two!!

I think you should store it under one of those plastic pyramids. They're supposed to focus some universal force and align the molecules on the edge keeping the knife razor sharp!
What ever happened to those things????You mean they didn't work????

Some people's perspiration is so corrosive it'll tarnish 18 karat gold, but next time you sharpen it wipe it with mineral oil or a Marine Tuff-Cloth and see if that helps.

If not ... soaking a leather sheath in mineral oil does a lot to keep real knives from rusting, but if you insist on carrying one of those stupid trick knives that fold in the middle you might have to go to -- ackkkkkkkkkk! -- stainless steel. If you do you might want to avoid ATS-34; it's less stainless than the others.

(Please don't tell The Wholly Brotherhood and Cisternity of Voracious Truth (Cougarites) I suggested stainless steel ... some of my fanatical followers might not be sufficiently brainwashed as yet and might not understand I only suggested it for pholder phanatics, who are beyond the pale anyway.)

And I thought I was losing my mind!!! I have a Buck 110 that absolutely REFUSES to take an edge. I have tried stropping, buffing, grinding, sanding, (I even sacrificed a live rooster at midnight on a full moon) but this sucker will not get sharp, much less stay sharp. (oh well, you get what you pay for)

Hello,

This is Common to the Carbon(non-Stain
resistant)type steels.

Its usally caused by the Oxidation of the Blade material on the Edge.

Not Usally a problem if the Knife isnt kept Stored for a long Period of time between
usage.

As stated above The sentry solution products should cut down dramatically on
undue oxidation of the edge.

My Old Timers seem to keep an unused edge longer than a Gerber LST and a couple of Puma folders that I have, but maybe it's because the edge was better to begin with. My carbon steel Mora knives don't seem to degrade much either, they stay in the garage and there is one in each car trunk, and I live in the Pacific NW.

Ive had this problem with my AWAC.... it's 440a so It isnt corrosion,,, I'll get it razor sharp, put it away... and no more than a week later its too dull to cut paper..... freaks me out man... brb... Lemme go sacrifice a gator and see if that works...

Pocket Lint may be the culprit in your pocket. It has happened to at least one of my knives with softer steel. Haven't noticed air doing any dulling, but if others say it does, I wouldn't doubt that it can happen.

Now, if we could just get air to sharpen em while we sleep, wouldn't that be cool!
