Just wondering what would be a good FIXED blade knife to take with me just to do some common jobs like chopping up some wood

Well there are plenty of choices in many budget ranges....Personally I like my RAT RC-4 but I have been know to use a KABAR (Which are cheaper). What price range/ if your using it for chopping up wood its a different knife then skinning/food prep. I would search around because this is a VERY common thread topic in Wilderness Survival forum.

If you like traditional styles, go with a Buck 119. (My old standby.) I wouldn't chop with it, though. I take a hatchet for that.

Before you buy anything, hang out in the Wilderness forum for a while, like Nate1714 said. You'll get quite an education there.

thx - cpr

Just a suggestion that you may want to give a few more specifics like rough price range, preferred uses (aside from the chopping you mentioned), do you also plan to take a folder along, etc. There are lots of good choices out there and the BF folks can definitely give you great suggestions. Have fun!

Many of the Rat knives are great or even the Scrapyard SOD, Dogfather, Busse FBM, FSH would all be great camp knives.

Chopping up some wood?

Got ya covered. Right here:

Been on many camping trips over the years. Even took knives. Never used one to chop wood, because I also took a hatchet or an axe.

YMMV.

Low price knives (at about 50-60 bucks): Kabar Large heavy bowie and Ontario SP-10 or SP-5

Little more money: RC-6, Ontario RTAK2, Cold Steel Trail Master, Bark River Bravo 1 or 2

$20 machete?

Hatchets and axes, of course, are more specific to splitting and chopping. If you buy a nice one in the $100 range you can do more than chop and split with it.

Axes: Gransfors Bruks, Roselli, more...

If you're car camping definitely bring an axe but if you're backpacking there are lots of different lighter weight options. One I prefer is a lightweight folding saw and a sturdy fixed blade 4 - 5 inches long that can be used to baton/split wood.

If you ask over in the Wilderness and Survival Skills forum you won't get any of the snide replies from folks who think knives should only be used to cut loose threads on their clothes and peel fruit for lunch like you will here in General

Rat Cutlery RC4 or 6

Becker BK7 or 2

Chopping? Go to Home Depot and buy an Estwing sportsman's axe. You'll find its better for chopping than any knife.
