I stumbled upon this forum, and joined about 1-1/2 months ago, when I was planning a camping trip.

I was looking for the "best" survival/camp knife, and from reading and posting, I learned a lot.

After much thought and consideration, I settled with a Cold Steel Kukri machete for light chopping, and a Kabar Becker Necker for more delicate work.

Thank you to all who helped.

Not bad functional and economical choices that covers most bases. Checkout the Wilderness and Survival Skills sub-forum to learn how to use them well :)

The Becker may be a little hard on the hand for protracted woodwork, but still plenty of knife - wrap it with paracord for both comfort and cordage supply.

Cheers :)

Indeed. Paracord will make it feel very comfy. Good choices. if Becker Necker doesn't satisfy you on this trip for delicate work, check Mora 2000. It has excellent reputation for bushcraft knife.

Yeah, being a broke college student, my budget had a lot to do with my choices. I was going to get a Frost Mora but I coudnt pass on the BK11 deal..

Some paracord is on order and should be here soon. Before the trip, I hope.

I'm a broke college student too. Get a couple of credit cards and max em out with your favorite knife purchases. Thats what I did...

Haha.. I have a MasterCard and AMEX but maxing them out is how you get into debt. I rather not charge it. I just got done paying off the AMEX..

The Cold Steel Kukri machete is an excellent chopper and all things camping.

I am going camping this weekend with my father and I'll use a similar setup and a Cold Steel Trail Hawk tomahawk, its another inexpensive effective chopper.

You are very wise to avoid credit card debt.

sand down the handle on that CS machete. you'll give yourself some wretched blisters if you don't. :)

Or use some "hockey tape" the ones they sell sports sections and you use for hockey sticks. I don't know its official english name and I am too lazy to google it.

I'm a firm believer that a knife or tool should have a grip that can be used without gloves. With gloves is a bonus, but if you lose/forget to wear them...what then? It only takes a minute or so to sand the handle and then you still have a good grip without abrading the flesh from your palm. ;)

I would love a RAT RC4, or a Fallkniven F1, but Im broke. Haha. I might just end up getting a Cold Steel SRK or something like that.

Interest rates suck and missing a payment makes things worst. I promised myself that I will only charge it if its a neccesity.

After playing with the CS Kukri, the handle does seem a little uncomfortable for prolonged use. So some hockey tape or sanding down the handle would probably be a good idea. If not, Im taking some Mechanix gloves with me so hopefully that will do.

Between those two choices, i'd go with "something like that". :)

I'd either save more and get the RC or if you got to have something sooner, go with a Becker BK7. Neither will disappoint.
