As you can see, I am goin nuts on a Spydie.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307058

Must be stupid as I had a lube prob with a SAK however THAT was because I got grit into it.
IS there a proper lube?

2nd question.....what is the easiest opening STUD opener at under $100? No "assists" please. Also like a decent steel.

Thanks for your patience.

aaaaaaaaarghh

:(

The "proper" lube is Militec 1.

The "proper" folder IS the BM 551 Griptilian or 556 Mini-Griptilian.

Dann, I'm not disregarding your reco of Militec. Just seeing if there might be an alternative that doesn't need a hairdryer and such.

Will probably do the operation anyhow.

Thanks for replies on both forums.

One guy's opinion.....I know, I know.....
I don't think there is one "PROPER" lube, as many seem to work OK, based on environment. With that being of no help to you and your question.... :D .....I think the first thing to do is get the pivot/action cleaned out. If this is the Native....it might need to be repaired, and none of this will be effective.

Basically, you need to flush the action out......Break Free seems to work best for me, however, since you have WD40, give the knife a good dose......work the action about 25 times.....blow it out from rear to front (compressor, gas station air, canned air) real well (watch your eyes) then wipe it down good. Whew! Next, I like mineral oil...just a little!...cheap, easy to find, foodsafe, doesn't smell. Work the action again about 25 times, wipe off excess....good to go, hopefully.
If that doesn't work, and you can't adjust the action... ....then you move to one of the gazillion different "High Speed" lubes.

Good luck to you.

Bill

I agree about the Grip and Mini-Grip being super easy to open. And if for some reason it doesn't come from the store that way (like my Mini) a 10 second adjustment with a torx wrench will fix it.

There may be hope for your Spydie. I have a Delica that came stiff. I washed out all of the lube with dish soap. I work the action 100 times basically any time I pick it up. It seems to have improved (I can now get the blade to drop when closing). IMO, if you're working the action with lube in it -- even WD-40 -- it's not going to break in as quickly if at all.

Liquid Tuff glide worked for me on a G-10 Harpy that was really hard to open. It was put on by the Tuff glide owner at the national NRA show.

Tri-flow worked on a Shabaria that wouldn't flick open. Benchmade used to recommend triflow.

Mil-tec is great for balisongs and you can get a free sample from the manufacturer. Benchmade now recommends this lubricant.

Buck, Country Knives and my mom like White Lightening. Country knives put some on her small no-name purse knife and she can now open it with her arthritic fingers.

Bernard levine and many others use mineral oil. No sticky residue.s

Glockman...keep your 440C grip. I'd rather have a hard to open native than a grip any day of the week. native trumps grip on handle, blade steel and lock.

On the Spyderco forum, Sal Glesser asked me to send it to him to look at. I did that yesterday.

THEN......Lavan gonna leave it ALONE....... :D

Do you guys have weak fingers or something? I've handled a buncha lockbacks from spyderco, not one was stiff at all to me

I dunno man.

I had a Native that was so damn tight you had to use two hands to open it. Partly because the hole was so small and half hidden by the handle I couldn't get my thumb into it, but partly because that spring was DAMN tight. The action was smooth, but you really needed to yank on it.

I train with a CoC Trainer and No.1 (and played concert piano for 10 years) so it's not like I'm TERRIBLY weak...

Maybe you've just been lucky.

I have a couple frn Spydies that I can flick open easily. I can pop them open too. I have always run them dry. And they get a LOT of use. I do remember them being tight for the first week or so--but nothing difficult.
