I've been asked to join some friends who are going hog hunting soon. We'll head out on horseback with a few dogs and harvest as many as we can in three days.

My question is, what knife should I use to take the hogs. I'm thinking that I may buy something new but have no idea what. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Are you planning to use this knife to sneak up behind the hog and slit it's throat while dogs are distracting it (the kill)? Or, are you talking about field dressing/skinning it after it's been shot?

what he said

but for skinning i dont think there is better than a dozier hunting knife.

for stabbing pigs hell id get a dozier bowie or ranger.

dozier makes the best hunting knives in the business imho.

for a budget version boker makes some of his skinning designs

also for the pig stickin kabar makes the baconmaker which is designed for just that and there is also the cold steel boar hunter

oh and to get you stoked as hell this guy is hard as @$%^: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJGd7G2wYuU&has_verified=1

IMO you want something heavy and balanced. If this is your first time, blade length is going to help as well. You want the blade naturally to point and thrust and swing where you want it to, and that also means a centered point along the axis of the handle. The Condor Thunderhead or Kumunga would be great. If you have a larger budget, something like the Junglas.

If you're talking about pigsticker and don't want to dish out alot of bread on some nice custom, I say go with a BK7. If you're worried about it not going deep enough, go BK9. :)

There's other options, but of course I'm a Beckerhead.

BACON MAKER!!! Damn why didn't I think of that?!
I'll definitely take a look at the Condors and yes we've always taken hogs with a knife.

Scrapyard Regulator for hog killing ..... Busse CABS or Rodent Solution for hog processing.

The options all depend on how much $$$ you want to drop.

Personally I would attach my Cold Steel large Bushman on a very stout stick and go from there. :)

I would get minimum 7" blade, maybe 9" in the right design. If you post in the General Outdoors/Hunting & Fishing forum, you'll get some good responses. There are a few guys from Texas and Hawaii that hunt hogs with knives and dogs. They'll give you some good recommendations. I'm an archery guy myself, but carry my RAT-7 in D2 while hog hunting. :-)

I am going at the beginning of November for a 200 lb or better and plan on using a custom by Ken Hall with an 11 inch blade.

I do believe that's what this guy is for :D

The few hogs I have run across here in California have been mean critters. With that in mind, I would use a 7MM Remington Magnum with a Baconmaker as a backup.
