G'Day. On an idea to do something different, I dug out my 1974 112 and an early 80's 501 for my EDC today. The 112 was my first nice knife and the 501 was my moms.
Any one else do this? I know a bunch of you have older Bucks, do they get carried? :)

My oldest Buck is a 1986 model 639 Fieldmate, and, it being a fixed blade, coming in a camoflage sheath, with a sawback spine and serrated false edge, I don't know that it'd be as readily accepted as your "historical" folders. ;) Great idea, though!

My oldest 110 is between '72 and '74. Gets used every year during hunting season. That is if me or one of the grandkids or my aged Dad get a deer or turkey, which is never a problem.

Thinking about retiring it and using one of the newer ones I have collected.

Oh, when I called this the oldest, I meant one that I have owned the longest. I have collected some that are older . Bought that first 110 after I came back out of the service.

I have a 10 year old 110 that I use as a work knife only. It's used when I open my toolbox and start projects for the wife or just work around the house. Buck just replaced the "C" blade on this one with a new one. I have a late 60's 110 that just gets wiped down once a month or so. Just think it's been around long enough fir it to take it easy now. As nice as it's condition is , except for a slight blade wobble, I'd like to keep it as/is...I guess I have 2 EDC's though...a 1980 model 112 and a late 70's 501...quite a difference in the two isn't there?...During the work-week I tend to carry the 501 due to it's nice size, on weekends it's time for the 112 to come out. Both super great knives...Might be time to get the 501 in for a new blade ...it's been used and sharpened enough that there is a piece of the tip that protrudes above the body of the knife even when it's closed. There's enough sticking out to cause neat little rips and cuts in my pockets that just make the wife go nuts...LOL...Hey Joe...another one might be on it's way to you soon...

Great !!! It's nice to see others using their oldies! GeoThorn, The Fieldmate is a real nice knife, I've got the basic model with black handle and black 'nylon' sheath. They are a good addition to any 119 collection.
LFH, I dont know if you know this about the 110 history.. The 110 was originally designed to be used a couple of weeks a year for hunting.
Darryl, It's too bad they wont let us keep the old blades for our own archives when we do a swap like that.

Why won't they let you keep the old blades after a swap? Have you asked? Curiiiious...

Yes, I am pretty much up to speed on the 110's... I thiink I am up to 25 or 30 now... totally lost count.
Afraid to count them. Wife might go a bit ballistic. I keep em scattered out so she cant see them all in one place at the same time.

I kinda got out of being "into" knives for awhile. So far I only have three 110s, two 2004s and one 2005 Idaho stamp. One of the 2004s is my EDC, the others are laying around, here and about. Mine don't qualify in the same category as those 1970s era blades out there!

Have you happened to "lose" any that you've 'scattered about?' ;) Easy to lose count if you can't find them all.

Geo, time flys when you're collecting. Sooner than we think Buck will have some new steel and our EDC's will be collectors.

Geo,,,I just make sure to hide them when the sons in law are here.

I have pretty much quit buying the old 110's and 112's. I now have a few in the '70 to '73 time frame along with some 112's in the same era. Going to sort them out and keep the keepers and sell off the rest. One of these days,,,kinda, sorta, maybe...

But I do like to carry different ones. Kind of depends on whether I am wearing jeans or shorts.

Had a guy spot my old 112 with brass spacer out at Texas knifemaker supply a while back, when I had it out explaining something to the wife about them. I haven't quite taken that one to the deer camp yet.

I got in one old 112 that I swear, had dried blood down in it. So someone had definitely been using it. Just hope it was animal blood..

Oh Yeah, I did find one recently buried way back in the bottom shelf of the safe. Well actully 3. Wife and I were out one day and she found a sale on 110's that had the 100 year stuff. So she picked out 4 I think. She put one in her pack and the other 3 got buried down there on the bottom shelf. And forgotten about. Those @#$% plastic clam packs sure take up a lot of room.

Sorry if I am babbling incoherently....

I have a 4 dot 110 i use in the garden a lot to cut bags of mulch and garden fabric and a 2 dot i take some times fishing and keep it in the car. :)

if no luck at all only bad luck!

dave

No problem Dave, Just let me know where to mail the plastic stuffr, of course I will have removed all the good stuff. Oh,,, never mind, I have your address. You bought one of mine off ebay. :D

Package of plastic on the way... I presume you recycle!...

Seriously tho, this is a fun post. I have even carried some of the different old 560's , an old single blade crosslock, and an old 303. Wife asks to use a knife frequently just to see what I have in my pocket.. Haven't quite figured out how to carry the kalinga. Guess I will have to wait till hunting season for that one.

I carry my 1973 110 from time to time. I'd carry it more, I'd even EDC it if I could get my hands on a new sheath (it's a very special knife and I don't want to lose it). When the custom shop opens back up, I've got a 2 dot 110 that needs a blade and I'll probably send a little extra with it to pick up a few sheaths.

Pyscho,

Are you sure you want to send in a two dot 110 for a new blade?
From what I understand you will get a new blade and it won't be a 2 dot anymore.

I recently picked up a new 110 at the local Academy sporting goods for $30 after tax. And while sorting through the blisterpacks I found one with a brown curved bottom sheath. Hadn't seen one of those sheaths in a long time. The sales kid said they were all brand new so I was expecting the Idaho tang stamp. Silly me... Got to the truck and immediately opened it and it was a late 2004. Then I found where the date was on the bottom and I should have seen that in the store. Would have bought it anyway just for the brown sheath.

I think I would hold on to a two dot....

There are lot of sheaths for the 110's on ebay. There is also a Buck Collector Club member here that I bought some from. Drop me an email and I will give you his email addy.

Right. That's not a problem really. I've got another two dot 110 that's in much better condition. Measured next to my '73 model, this two dot's blade is a good quarter inch shorter due to some, shall we say, unfortunate sharpening by its previous owners. It's also got some blade play that I've never really experienced with a 110 before (my no dot 1973 110 doesn't move when it locks open). I picked it up cheap on ebay because the scales looked good and I knew I could get a blade upgrade done on it once they open back up.

Can you not request that your old blade be returned? Then you end up with a loose blade laying around with all the other debris.
I wish I had my first 110 which I liberated from my big brother because he didn't carry it and I wanted it. Don't remember what happened to it or many of the others I used up since. I still have 2 '86s and an '87. I have finally quit trimming strings and started using my edc Idaho a bit rougher lately.
I had a 112 years ago and didn't like the sharp edges. I think I gave it away to a GF. I picked one (a 112) up for $3 at a garage sale about a month ago. It has been badly sharpened and had the tip re-profiled but still has many years in it.
What was the reasoning behind the 112 not having the edges rounded as the 110 did? I probably would have bought a few more but they didn't feel right in my hand.

I recently bought a 112FG and I didn't like the square shoulder on it either. So I got my little dremel out and changed it. It is VERY comfortable now. I'm in the process of making a new belt sheath for it and looking forward to using it daily.

I've been using my 1975 #105 Pathfinder for 30 years. It's going backpacking with me this weekend. :D
