Goin' to New Orleans after Christmas

I going through my work (EPA) as part of the clean-up crew, and was wondering what I should bring. I already have the steel-toed boots, and a Swiss-tool, and I was wondering what pocket-knife I should bring. I'll most likely be staying in dorm-style housing, on a cot, or in a camper-trailer with a bunk-mate who I will most likely not know. So, I don't want to take anything of great value, but it needs to be functional and efficient. I usually carry a larger pocket knife clipped to my pockets, or in a sideways mounted sheath. My EDCs are a Cuda Dominator, MT LCC D/A, BM 42, and a Spyderco Native and the Cabela's S30V 110, all of which may be too expensive. Should I just get the $23 Buck 110 from Wal-Mart? Maybe the Dozier Kabar folders would work.

Any suggestions? You see my normal choices, so something that would be equivalent in size.

Maybe a CUDA Heat, isn't that the same pattern as the Dominator?

When I was in Mississippi in October, the only knife I used was my Leatherman Wave. Thats all you really need, but a nice cheap folder is good too. I like the KaBar Doziers.

How about a Camillus EDC. Steel framelock. They had a run of 154-CM blade steel. It is low priced but solid lockup.

My guess is that the Swiss-tool will handle everything you need. I might also bring a light single-blade folder with an eye on using it for food prep (I'd tote along my Endura which has smeared much butter in its day!) and maybe self defense in a pinch. I don't think you really need to buy anything new. Now, if you're looking for an excuse to buy another knife, well, tell your wife we said "Go for it!" :p ;)

i'm 60 mil north of there i'll e-mail you my ph # call me if you need any fresh AIR,AS IT STINKS IN THERE,,,,,and thanks for your help!

I was in N.O. two weeks ago. There are ALOT of people there doing cleanup work. There is also not a lot of law and order, especially at night. I would think self-defense as well as function when considering a blade. I'd carry that LCC if I were in your shoes.

I think the Buck 110 is a good idea , its been about for a long time and is well known and trusted and cheap to replace , paired with a swisstool ( that is what i would take too if i was in your shoes ) i think its a good setup , cant comment on the self defence bit as its not something that i think about due to the UK knife laws , to me a knife is a tool not a weapon , but i can see where you guys are coming from .

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I'm quite tempted to take my nicer knives, as I'm already familiar with them, and money is short. From the pics I've seen of our team members going out, they are usually accompanied by an armed "Special EPA Agent" with a shotgun. Maybe with official looking apparel, I won't be a target for anything other than a hearty "thank-you" from the locals. I know my family and church will be doing a lot of praying for my safety, and not just from people, but the other unGodly things that are around. We are in charge of collecting hazardous waste, and such.

Keep the suggestions coming, and I may find an idea I hadn't thought of .

Got your email gunslinger. If I end up bringing carry-on luggage only, I might need someone to whom I could ship my sharp objects. Thanks for the offer.

The knife laws here are really friendly. Thank you very much for coming and helping. All of us in the state appreciate it.

Here's our knife laws...

Louisiana - R.S. 14:95. Illegal carrying of weapons is...
(1) The intentional concealment of any firearm, or other
instrumentality customarily used or intended for probable
use as a dangerous weapon, on one's person; or
(4) The manufacture, ownership, possession, custody or use
of any switchblade knife, spring knife or other knife or
similar instrument having a blade which may be
automatically unfolded or extended from a handle by the
manipulation of a button, switch, latch or similar
contrivance...

Anything i can do, let me know.

I'd say go with one of the Spyderco Salt series. Rust proof steel, bright handles, stronger tip, only problem is they aren't super cheap.
