Yesterday while driving the truck, I had the radio on as usual. Not really paying attention to what was on, but then I heard something that really grabbed my attention..

SH mentioned the same thing I heard and asked a question about it..

It was an ad for ACE HARDWARE mentioning Case knives :D..
I couldn't believe it... I usually don't dwell on negative stuff to much, but yesterday was one of those days. Work has slowed down, people are continually getting layed off, thinking about all the people that are out of work
and trying to get enough together to buy gifts for their kids for x-mas, thinking about all the people in our Armed Forces that are overseas and won't be able to see their families for the holidays etc etc ..

All of the sudden it was like someone flipped a switch. I heard the ad and it was like I had just went back to my childhood.. It reminded me of the ads I used to hear when I was a kid, the only thing that was missing was an add for a 22 rifle.....

I'm sure there are a lot of people that didn't pay much attention to it, but I don't remember hearing any advertising that generated that kind of feeling....

I wish I could have heard that radio advertisement.

My local Ace Hardware store used to sell a beautiful selection of Case knives. But sadly, starting in the last year or so, he stopped re-stocking and yesterday I walk in to find the empty old wood and glass display Case is now for sale.. A sign of things to come I fear.

They've been playing that ad here in the Detroit area too. Definately reminds one of days gone by.

The things my kids are going to miss out on...

Squeaky wooden floors of the local hardware store.
Real drug stores that had pharmacists that knew you and didn't sell TV's, toys, and holiday decorations.
Gas stations that didn't sell snacks, cell phones and bongs.
TV and radio comercials for guns, knives, tobacco (even though the last one is not good for ya, the commercials were memorable and not restricted by the P.C.).

I stopped in a gas station south of Atlanta, GA last year while I was on a business trip. Instead of the cheap chinese knives cluttering the counter, they had a small Case display with maybe 10 knives in it. Gave me a bit of hope that the entire country has not gone down the tubes and that their might still be places where people still care about things like quality, service, workin' hard, and playin' hard.

I travel a lot on business. I've been to hundreds of gas stations across this country in just about every state in the Union. Leave it to an out-of-the-way Georgia hole in the wall to be the most memorable gas station I've ever been to. :p Why? because of a little Case display. I need help :D.

There is certainly a lot of charm when you see an old knife case in an older place of business. Do not hesitate for permission to rummage around on the inside and look for something that is really charming. I've never been turned down, and rotating stock in the knife case was not a priority for many clerks. I've pulled it over hundreds of times just hoping to find an old knife case to check out. It is generally futile, but not always. Rupestris, you are in good company.

I did get a pleasant surprise the other day.... I went to the local Sportsmans Warehouse( I love that store) and cruised the knife displays. They always have a wide selection of knives. They still have a counter display full of Buck knives and a Schrade display (we all know whats in those now though ) and when I got to the area where the Case knives are, I couldn't belive my eyes... Lots of shiny new Case knives:D. They must have had 30-40 knives.
Stockmans, peanuts, trappers, even mini and full size Copperlocks...

Nope, you don't need help. Sometimes it really is the simple things that bring a smile to your face...

Arghhh... Michigan is poluted with Gander Mountains (worst service ever) and Bass Pro Shops. They opened their first Sportsmans Warehouse (eastern most SW to date) just before Christmas last year. The store cloed up around July of this year. Less than 7 months.

The customer service there was over the top. Outstanding.

The store was just over a mile from my house and the knife selection was stelar. Case, Bark River, CRKT, TOPS. I really liked the store.

Glad you still got one in your area.

Wow, 7 months ???? I guess with the other stores you guys have, competition would be stiff.
SW is the only game we have out here, so they do really well. I'd be lost if they closed the one here in town.. We have another one thats about 120 miles from here, so I guess I would have to start making road trips again...

My local Ace has two fully stocked knife cases. A nice large one with Case, Bear, Vic, Kershaw and Buck. The small one has "CRAP in it like Frost and Rough Rider" (quoting the crusty old gent behind the counter). They even have some yellow Delrin Case CV! Unfortunately no ad on the radio that I've heard.

Last time I was in our local Ace, the guy told me that they were going to stop stocking any pocket knives. Odd. They did have a nice selection of Victorinox, Case, Bear, and a few RR/Steel Warrior/Frost stuff, too.

Have to go back and see if they really did stop selling knives. What's a hardware store w/o decent knives? Sheesh.
