Next month some friends and I are doing a little backpacking trip up Spring City Canyon, here in Central Utah May 18th to 20th. We'll be backpacking into the Haystack Troves, base camping there and doing hikes in the surrounding area. The hike in and out is between 3.5 and 4 miles, depending on which trail we take in and out. The troves are filled by a spring that will be flowing, water will need to be filtered or boiled, but will be close. It should be early enough in the year for fires. . . The last time that I camped here was 20 years ago in the mid summer and can't wait to get back up there for a few nights.

Sunday morning, we'll have breakfast then hit the trail. Once we get to the little valley, we'll take a break, setup camp, have lunch, then do some exploring. Sunday evening, we'll do dinner's in camp, Probably on a small fire. A friend and I are planning to grill steaks and bake potatoes on the fire, or do Tin foil/Hobo dinners. - We want to have breakfast and hit the trail relatively early so that we have more time to do stuff at the Troves.

Monday will be more exploring, hiking and enjoying the mountains.

Tuesday after more fun, we'll head off the mountain. Probably in the afternoon after lunch.

Along with the Camping and hiking, we're hoping to do some bushcrafty type stuff like make camp furniture (chairs, table, cook stand etc.). With the Evergreens and Aspens, we should have plenty of wood to work with. Making a brush shelter might also be something fun to do. I remember seeing plenty of deadfall last spring when I was there.

Here are some pictures that I took last June of the trail into and around the Haystack Troves: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjGpHqC6

The valley floor is around 8,300 feet. Day time temps should be in the 60's to 70's. Night time temps could be anywhere from the mid 40's down to the upper 20's. You'll want a 20 degree bag and possibly some kind of shelter. I plan to sleep in a 20 degree bag out under the stars, but will have a tent or good shelter as back up in case there is wind up there.

If you're interested in joining us for the trip, let me know. It's open to anyone that can make it.

That's sure some mighty fine looking country. Trail looks pretty nice too cept for the rocky stretch, might mess with me front casters.

Makes me want to work out and get my arms back in lean mean traveling machine mode and get out.

I look forward to my annual pilgrimage to lake over on the east side near the Idaho border. Not roughen really but outside and fishing, both boat and dock. Pretty country there too, lots of wildlife to look at.

Beautiful country! I could use about a month of camping right there right now! Brrrr! 8300'? Thats a bit cold for this Texan but id still do it:thumbup:

Can ya make a six foot popsicle stick cause id be a meat popsicle after a few 8300' frozen nights.
Enjoy your trip Wildmanh!! Wish I could go!

Really awesome of you to extend the invitation to us all! Im afraid that's way too cold for me, too. Brrrrrrr!

Have fun!

Great to go for backpacking and hiking those of you who can go wish you all great time!

Thank you friends! :)

Last year, my brother, his family and I did some short (~1.5 mile in) backpacking trips around the same time. The first weekend, we were in a canyon and it was pretty warm. The second weekend (same weekend last year) we were up on a ridge close to Haystack and almost froze our rears off. This year, we'll be at the same height but in a valley, so I expect it to be a little warmer. Less wind do to the valley walls and more trees. Even if it's in the upper 20's, it will still be a blast!

Have a great trip Wildmanh,
For a long time I thought the Army had ruined all of the fun of backpacking/climbing for me. Last year I found some of my old gear in a storage area and started thinking about dragging it out and dusting it off. Not able to get all the way to UT, but certainly remember the area fondly from many years ago. Is the area you are talking about sort of near Cedar City? Not familiar with any of the names you used and can't tell from Google if I am thinking of the right general area.

Spring City, UT is about 3 hours north of Cedar City. It's almost 5 miles south of the dead center of the state. Our Mountains have a lot of the same trees as Ceder City (lived there for 1 year as a kid), but much different terrain and rock formations. Both are nice places. Sanpete County where I live, has about 27,822 people in 1,602 square miles. Cedar City has ~29,118 people. When I was there Spring 1991 to spring 1992, the population was around 13,500. It has exploded in the last 20+ years! I too have fond memories of Cedar City and southern Utah.

My mom and I will be moving in May or June, about 4 blocks from where we live now. Won't affect the campout. It's still a Go! :D

Hey Friends, we are Three and a half weeks away from the backpacking trip. Right now, it looks like there are 4 of us going. If anyone is interested in joining us, please do so. The more the merrier.

Got an email this morning from a friend, asking if I could help outfit one of the people that are going. Figured that I should remind everyone that we are getting closer to the travel date. Yeah, I'm excited. LOL!

Been trying to figure out which pack to bring. My mom has a Kelty from the 1960's with modern Waist Belt, I have an Alice pack mounted to a modified Kelty frame and modern Suspension system, and a Molle II Ruck. Yes, all external frame packs. I also have a Blackhawk SOF Ruck (Think Modern Large Alice) that I really like, but the Alice frame doesn't fit me. Maybe I'll put the Blackhawk SOF Ruck on my Modified Kelty frame. So many options. . . It's like picking a knife of knives for the trip. LOL!

I'll keep you all posted. :)
