Next month some friends and I are doing a little backpacking trip up Spring City Canyon, here in Central Utah May 18th to 20th. We'll be backpacking into the Haystack Troves, base camping there and doing hikes in the surrounding area. The hike in and out is between 3.5 and 4 miles, depending on which trail we take in and out. The troves are filled by a spring that will be flowing, water will need to be filtered or boiled, but will be close. It should be early enough in the year for fires. . . The last time that I camped here was 20 years ago in the mid summer and can't wait to get back up there for a few nights.
Sunday morning, we'll have breakfast then hit the trail. Once we get to the little valley, we'll take a break, setup camp, have lunch, then do some exploring. Sunday evening, we'll do dinner's in camp, Probably on a small fire. A friend and I are planning to grill steaks and bake potatoes on the fire, or do Tin foil/Hobo dinners. - We want to have breakfast and hit the trail relatively early so that we have more time to do stuff at the Troves.
Monday will be more exploring, hiking and enjoying the mountains.
Tuesday after more fun, we'll head off the mountain. Probably in the afternoon after lunch.
Along with the Camping and hiking, we're hoping to do some bushcrafty type stuff like make camp furniture (chairs, table, cook stand etc.). With the Evergreens and Aspens, we should have plenty of wood to work with. Making a brush shelter might also be something fun to do. I remember seeing plenty of deadfall last spring when I was there.
Here are some pictures that I took last June of the trail into and around the Haystack Troves: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjGpHqC6
The valley floor is around 8,300 feet. Day time temps should be in the 60's to 70's. Night time temps could be anywhere from the mid 40's down to the upper 20's. You'll want a 20 degree bag and possibly some kind of shelter. I plan to sleep in a 20 degree bag out under the stars, but will have a tent or good shelter as back up in case there is wind up there.
If you're interested in joining us for the trip, let me know. It's open to anyone that can make it.
