So I have 95% of my rain gear and waterproof stuff for the weekend but I need some help for a tarp. What does everyone use for a rain tarp? Cheapo tarp tied up to trees? A large self standing canopy?

Whatever you can afford, carry, and know how to setup. Bring more cordage than you probably think that you'll need.

I like silnylon, because it is light and packs small.

Have a great time. I'm getting out, myself, on Saturday and hitting the Florida Trail.

Thanks. Where can I get silnylon? I am in florida to and heading over to peace river. Stay dry out there this weekend:thumbup:

If your going to be canoeing, no need to spend a lot of $$ on the lightweight stuff, just get some poly tarps at wally world. Here's a thread I started about the lightweight expensive tarps. Some great recommendations in here. But again, these are all about saving weight:

I am sure you know about canoes and rain gear, but for those that don't, ponchos are not a good idea as they are a bitch to swim in should your canoe go over. Have fun!

The above posts pretty much have it covered but I'll say this; Bring plenty of food - including snacks, playing cards, liquor (if you partake), cigars, and good conversation, or a good book if alone because you will be chilling out under that tarp all evening :) Not necessarily a bad thing though.

A hypothermia kit in a drybag is a good idea too. Wet from a dunking or from rain, even 55 degrees can be dangerous.

big ol sheet of heavy clear construction plastic. 8' x 500' = 1 cent shelters (about 400 of them)

cheap and recyclable, throw em in the plastics recycling bin.

and unlike nylon (over time) or poly tarps.....its actualy 100% waterproof, and if you punctur it duct tape will seal it.

I have an alpine rain jacket and rain pants. A pancho is a no no for anything other than sitting at an outdoor event.:D

We are bringing baby back ribs, prechopped potatos, homemade chex mix and lots of beer and liquor :D Its a good size group so it will be a blast even if its raining cats and dogs. And hopefully no one goes for an unexpected swim, we got gators down here :)
