Alright as the title suggests, I am curious from everybody what their favorite SAK for heading into the out of doors. This is assuming that you already have yourself a large blade(s) and you want a SAK to keep in your pocket.

What's your pick?

Ill go with my blue farmer. But yeah a plain edge trekker is my second choice. Bit more awkward to carry in a pocket

I carry a Trekker.

But I am curious as to why everyone loves the farmer? Because of the saw?

Perfect size and weight for pocket carry, all tools fold flat and are unobtrusive when the others are in use, comfortable in many grips, good compromise of width vs tool quantity and utility, sturdy in every way, looks great.

Trekker has one handed opening, lock, sturdy and good size tools but for my purposes it fails in the other areas mentioned.

One Hand Forrester for sure ;-)

Saw, corkscrew for the bottle of wine with the SO, blade for wittling with the kids....whats not to like?

Does anyone know if the magnifying glass on the Explorer or Champ is sufficient enough to start fire? It's pretty small.

As for me, its slim and easy to carry, has all the tools I need, and has the end-mounted awl. I use the awl as much as the saw.

I also have a OHT, but it's a bit bulky in the pocket. The hump above the opening hole is slightly uncomfortable when using the saw. The Rucksack lacks one hand opening, but also lacks the uncomfortable hump.

I got a dried leaf charred and smoking on a moderate Autumn day without too much effort, so I would assume you would be able to start a fire with enough focus.

My VIC Farmer Defiantly but maybe my Helmsman, doesn't have a saw though.:(

I too was curious, I have several other models that I love. I kept hearing about the "farmer" and by looking at it, I had other Vic's that had what it had and more. But as I do too often I bought another knife and boy am I glad I did. Like others have said its slim, tough, well built as all Vic's are but just a degree better. Put it this way, I took it in to work to show my friends and one guy ordered one that night. Its a very sharp looking knife. It's all about the ALOX scales.
