Going light this week, can i hack it?

I'm a tech, therefore, it goes without saying that i love gadgets, problem is, i've come to the realization that i'm carrying *too many* gadgets on me....

on an average workday, i have on me;
SureFire 6P, and Inova X5 in belt holster
Fenix L1 in RF pocket
iPod Nano in RF pocket
Spyderco Cricket clipped to RF pocket
Vic. Spartan loose in RF pocket
Spyderco Native clipped to LF pocket
Kershaw Scallion loose in LF pocket

(i obviously left out the mundane stuff like the wallet (RF) and keys (LF) )

funny thing is though, due to deep pockets, nobody could tell i was carrying all that stuff in my pockets

when i came right down to it, i only *actually* used the Fenix, the SAK and the Cricket on a regular basis, the other stuff was there "just in case"....

so, this week i'll be performing an experiment, i'll limit myself to the Fenix, and 3 knives, see if i miss the other "stuff", the Cricket is a permanent EDC, and i should probably keep the SAK on permanent EDC as well, just for the phillips screwdriver, so i'll vary the 3rd blade each day...

....or not, as i *really* like the Harpy.....

lets see if i can survive a week *EDC-light*

(yes, I *did* cheat a little, the holster with the 6P and X5 is in the car, just in case i need them, i just won't have them *on* me....)

You might try a "little big" spyderco, like the Dodo, or in a more extremely example, the para. The dodo especially makes sense if you like the cricket.

I really do not understand why you would need 4 knives and 3 flashlights. Are you being serious or is this post you just joking with us?

Well, multiple knives is akin to multiple black powder guns.

Dull one, grab a sharp one, sharpen later. (versus empty one, grab a loaded one, load later)

so far, the knife combo of SAK, Cricket and Harpy is a winner, technically i could limit myself to SAK and Harpy, but the Cricket's too cool to *not* carry, and it takes up so little space....

flashlight-wise, i *did* need the 6P today, to illuminate a physically cracked iBook screen and to illuminate a wiring bundle i was trying to reconnect in a G5 tower...

so, bare minimum combo would be SAK and Harpy for knives, Fenix and 6P for flashlights...

the only reason i carry the X5 is because it takes up less space than a SureFire SC-1 Spares Carrier, the X5 is a spares carrier that makes light, and i feed it the "dead" batteries the 6P is "done" with, the X5 can still make useful light out of them, i keep a fresh set of CR123a batteries in the X5, once the 6P has drained it's batteries, i swap the batteries from the X5 into the 6P

Thank you for the answer MacTech. I was more or less yanking your chain. I too cary 3 knives most of the time. 2 SAK's and a larger locking folder. I also have Maglites everywhere. :D

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Heresy! How does a dedicated gadgeteer survive without preparing for every eventuality? Reducing your EDC is taking your life into your hands.

I'll try to make the funeral. *sniff, sniff*

Cosine, in the immortal words of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...

"Don't Panic!"

i only said i was going light *this week*, after all, on my first day of goin' light i ran into 2 instances where i needed my SureFire 6P, so after this week, i'll probably be back to my normal carry load, maybe shy one or two blades (the Native and Scallion)

so, looks like that's indispensable, as far as the knives go, the SAK/Cricket/Harpy combo seems to work out the best, i don't think i need to change that setup, i'm not willing to leave the Cricket or the Harpy at home, and the SAK alone helped me pull apart a G5 tower quite easily....

on a G5 tower, Apple puts a little 2 piece plastic "rivet" through the top shelf and into the G5 processor trim plate, the little blade on the SAK was able to pop the center of the rivet out, and the reamer was able to cut the other half of the rivet away (these rivets are consumable, one-use items, removing them destroys them), and the phillips head screws that hold the power supply in are typpically too cramped to access with a normal screwdriver, the SAK phillips handled these cramped screws no problem...

the Kershaw Scallion is a fun toy, nothing more, no *logical* reason to carry it as EDC, as i can open the Harpy and Native almost as fast as the Scallion, and the Harpy can easily handle cutting chores the Native handled

i think the Native may become my "car knife" now....

and due to the utility and versatility of the Hawkbill blade design, in all honesty, the Harpy could probably replace the Cricket too, but as i said above, i'm not leaving the Cricket behind, it's too cool to leave at home, and takes up almost no room

MacTech,

I'm also a Mac tech. :D Here's to good taste in technology.

I generally EDC pretty light. Case trapper and (on occasion accompanied by) Emerson CQC-10/BM710/Spyderco Police. Sometimes, I can let myself live on the edge and only carry one, in which case it's either the Case or a SS Delica.

Peace.
Alex.

Nice to see another Mac Gearhead on the forums :), where do you work, an Apple store, or an AASP?

i'm in a small 3 man shop in Southern NH, i'm the sole Tech, the other two are salesguys, so it comes to *me* to be the bearer of bad news to customers....

anyway, back on subject....

Note to self, check battery levels in lights before heading out....

the knife selection performed admirably, i can't fault any of them, today the SAK performed the lions share of the work, the Cricket got the day off, and the Harpy was only pulled out to open a particularly stubborn bag of potato chips in a nigh-unopenable bag (Spyderco Harpy; 1 Kettle Chips paper/foil bag; 0), and to pry off some plastic phillips-head screw cover stickers on a PowerBook G4 12", yes i should have used the Cricket, but the Harpy was already on the table and more convenient....

(yes, admittedly using a Harpy to open a bag of chips is like hunting mosquitos with a 12-gauge shotgun, but still, it was fun.....)

it turns out i *did* need the 6P after all, to illuminate a damaged iBook screen and illuminate the dark corners of a G5 tower i was doing a "heart transplant" (power supply replacement) on

good thing too, as the NIMH battery in my Fenix L1 chose this time to unexpectedly die

so, i may have to end the experiment sooner than i thought, as i really *do* need pretty much all my EDC crap, i think i'll stay with the SAK/Cricket/Harpy combo of knives though, that pretty much covers everything, i'll leave the Native in the car as a "car knife", and the Scallion, hmmm, i *could* carry it just in case....

i think that for now, the superior usability and utility of the Harpy trumps the Native
