I'm going to be traveling soon and at first, was going to buy a knife at the destination, but eventually decided I wanted to risk TSA stealing my knife and will put it in the checked luggage, maybe locking it somehow...

Wish me luck.

By the way, it'll be my sebenza 25. Would never risk my 21s.

Nothing personal to any TSA thugs reading this, but they can go through your checked-in (and locked) luggage and emancipate your Sebenza for you. As can the goons who work for the airlines. Link. Maybe consider letting them steal a Buck Vantage instead.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. If you just can't live without it, ship it via Fed Ex to your destination and let them hold it for you until you get there.

I would not even even try and do this to my user Sebenza.. they are just too precious to have someone steal it from your checked luggage. I'd probably carry a replaceable knife instead..

A Spyderco DF2 would be a great alternative. :D

Maybe I'm in the minority, have been lucky, etc.... but I've checked expensive knives--both fixed and folding and have not lost anything. Beckers, Busses, Striders, Emersons, GECs, etc... I typically clip a folder to the inside of a pocket, have a small pouch with another one or two, and wrap up a the fixed blade I'm bringing. They all get tucked into my packing cubes (my wife is a very organized packer of luggage) and they make it to my destination and back.

Of course. I'll spew bloody murder when the time comes and something is gone... but for now, no problems.

I need a valium just thinking about an airport.
I've zip tied my zippers on my check in bag. You will know immediately at the carousel if someone has been in your gear.
Enjoy your vacation

If you have an electric razor, put the knife with the razor and wrap the cord around them both together. Then put them in a sock or carrying case. It worked for me with my gerber air ranger.

Where are you going to be traveling to or through ?

In my experience the bag rifling essentially stops as soon as you leave America. I have been all over the world and the US is by far the worst place for "losing" stuff out your bag. People just seem to accept the TSA thefts and abuses etc. as normal, it's not. :)
The UK and Holland would be next on my list but they open your bag infront of you so have little to no chance, never mind interest, in liberating your possessions.

The only way I would travel with my Seb is if I were driving to my destination. I would not take it if I were flying somewhere. For me, it wouldn't be worth the constant worry, and if it were stolen, it would ruin the whole trip.

get a small tsa approved safe, lock it in there and then use a zip tie or a small lock to secure your luggage zipper.

this is what i do and I've not had an issue

I wouldn't do it, it's not worth the risk! TSA is terrible about pawing through your stuff, I would just take a cheap knife or buy one upon arrival and then ship it back home.
Have a fun trip:)

Hi,

Maybe my recent experience will help…

I just moved to Cairo with the family. In one bag (that I tried to get extra insurance for, without success) I packed a Bravo 1, a Native5 G10, and the Damascus blade for my small 21 Micarta…along with the Lego Death Star (long story). Made it just fine…though, we had to go to Jordan first. I was informed before getting on the plane in Jordan, leaving for Cairo, that there was a problem with my bag. It was the same bag in question, and they opened the box for the Native, and held the box for the Bravo, but, I think it was the 10,000+ pieces of Legos that disturbed them.

I split the knife into two pieces after having read someone doing that on the forum. I think that person carried on the handle, and the bolts and spacers in a separate bag (also carry-on). [Big thanks to that person for the idea…]

Also, for what it is worth, my dad accidently packed a Scarab and brought that to me to Jordan and it made it.

Having offered that, I do not think I would pack my knife, any of the few I have, just for a vacation minus our Vic, or a Leatherman. But, I suppose what you pack depends on what you are going to do on your vacation…hunting, or gathering after the kids…

Best of luck and let us know what happens.

Personally, I find a SAK to be very useful when traveling. I can't count the times the can opener has saved the day. Because of this, I leave the expensive stuff home unless I plan to have a specific need for it, such as hunting.

I've packed a bunch of knives in my checked baggage, and while they've all made it to the destination, I don't think I'd try it with anything that cost >$200.

A superb point, SAKs are probably the best travelers knife going and for a number of reasons. :)

I've never had any issues bringing CRKs in my baggage. On a trip to Cuba, I stuffed my Small Regular inside the handle of my four piece kayak paddle.

I guess I'm lucky there wasn't a light fingered paddler going through my stuff:D

Well I will be traveling within the states.

Ca to yellowstone... but if I get passport on time, Peru

Hmm, TSA safe safe? Sounds like I should look into this...

just search "TSA safe" on amazon. works well for me, i also have done the order online and have it shipped to where i was staying, usually something useful but inexpensive. Delica or endura or the like, then just give it as a gift upon departure. Its less cost out of pocket and then very nice to give to a friend or relative.

of course, it feels terrible to be without a CRK form even a day, nothing really takes its place. But man i sure do appreciate getting that Sebenza back in the pocket when i get back home.

When I flew back from Blade this year I had everything wrapped up in those cloth bags everyone gives you. I then used about 9 rolles of tape to bind the whole thing up. I found the TSA love letter in my bag as usual and expected (I have had one every time), but my bundle of taped up stuff was untouched. If they want to fingerprint my belongings and look for things to steal they can fight there way in to it, I really don't like those shady sneaks at all.

TSA probably couldn't tell the difference in quality between a CRK and a Smith and Wesson. But I still wouldn't chance it lol
