Hi all, when you go out camping, will you take a hatchet with you instead of a big knife like SH? Let's assume we are not camping in african jungles. :)

I prefer to take a large knife like the SH or BM. They are able to perform multiple tasks of cutting and chopping all in the same package. The last time I went into the back country I used a Steel Heart to do everything from chop large wood for the fire, carve much thinner branches to help get the fire started, open food packages, and even help hold a very hot titanium pot I was boiling water in. While an axe could have done some of that just as well it would not have done all of it as well. I am also of the school of thought which thinks a knife is a better defense tool should the need arise.

Bottom line is that you will never regret having a good knife around, and an axe could simply be dead weight.

I would opt for a large knife like the BM. Also, take a small knife like a SAK or MS or something.

It really depends on what kind of camping you are doing. If you are doing the type of camping where your vehicle is actually with you at the campsite, then you can bring just about everything and anything. If not, then you have to start thinking weight to utility ratio. With that said, I would go with the large knife. The Busses from NO on up can do just about everything in camp that needs ot be done. I will bring a thinner folder (like a Buck 110) with me as well, but the larger Busses do all. And, like someone said above, they are more fun.

Idaho, you suck!;)

Hi,
When where the hatchets made?Any idea how many? The first I ever saw was on the pic post at the begining.Must be the same one. When I go camping my truck is pretty close,I know some say it's not really camping.I have an old Marbles #2 hatchet that was a wreck, then I cleaned and sharpened and have had about ten years.Works and cuts great.I prefer to carry a knife when out in the wood.In the truck I also have a Hudson Bay Axe/Hatchet.Can't beat a big knife for pure fun. This year I will have a Busse or SRKW to use, only have to pick which one.

I think the hatchets were made a three or four years ago. Not sure how many made, but FEW.

And yes, BASTID HOG is right :D

well if busse had a hair on his a$$ he would make all you guys a hatchet of infi!

and me one too because the one i posted is marcs:grumpy:

rumor has it that there were either 2 or 3 of these large hatchets made, although Jerry remembers only making two of them (of course that could be CBL induced amnesia).

One of the reasons so few were made was because making these large hatchets entailed a great deal of waste; they are bigger and heavier than what the picture reflects and several bars of INFI were required to make each one due to the width of the head of the hatchet.

While I have never chopped with mine, I can tell you that the leverage is fantastic and the chopping ability would be second to none. The blade is also as sharp as any knife!

Thank God I have a heavy duty safe in my house. With Skunks pending arrival in 7 days (we are headed to SHOT), it will probably remain locked up for the entire weekend !!
