Do you think the swisstool is up to it? Do i need to worry about it rusting? Any part of it for that matter? There are a few rust spots on it that i should probably polish out and apply some wax over. But other than that if it takes a full dunking and i'm not able to clean it for a day or two, will it be catastrophic? Should i just bring my set of rapala pliers?

Saltwater will destroy just about anything if you don't clean it afterward. I would dunk it in distilled water (get a jug at Walmart) a few times as soon as possible after you get off the boat. Then spray it down with WD-40 or some spray lube and wipe it off. Even if you don't get saltwater directly on it, there is salt spray everywhere if it's windy or choppy. Remember, it's stainLESS, not stain free. Except for Talonite (Stellite) or H1 maybe.

I thought i read somewhere that victorinox polishes their tools up so high and uses low carbon steel so rusting isnt much of an issue. Maybe i'll just bring my mora clipper and my rapala pliers tomorrow then. Thanks for the help!

Yes, the high polish does help prevent rusting. i'm not sure the physics behind it but it helps. I would still worry about salt water near anything that isn't spyderco h1 steel.

Just saying, I love my Spyderhawk. Next time, pliers and something in H1, simply so you don't have to worry. The less you have to worry about the better.

I'm surprised your Swisstool rusted at all. A couple of my saks have been wet with sea water for hours with absolutely no visible effects. Not sure if the handles of the Swisstool are treated differently than the tools are though.

During camping and hiking trips I took my alox Victorinox Soldier to salt water areas a lot of times, I also live not far away from the sea, and the Pioneer has been to the sea this summer. Both don't have signs of rust. But, I cleaned them regularly by cleaning them together with the other dish. That seems enough to keep them free of rust.

Just make sure you rinse it with freshwater after fishing. The polish actually seals the pores in the metal.
