I'm going to Alaska in October and I have been going back and forth on what fixed blade knife I should bring. I was hoping you guys could lend some advice. What knife would you bring and why? On the top of my list as of now is a Dozier Professional Guide. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Rob

I think the Dozier will serve you well. You may want to back it up with an ax or folding saw if you might need firewood. I would also suggest one of the multi tools that are out there. They come in real handy when far from home :) Have fun! Alaska is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

bigcountry,

What are you planning to do while you're here? If you can give me some sort of idea of what sort of knife tasks you are expecting to engage in, I will give you my opinions/recommendations. Also, are you looking to buy a new blade or do you have some inventory to choose from?

Buck 119. Excellent quality, all-duty, durable knife that really holds a good edge. I have used mine for everything from chopping wood to fine leather work. (I actually perfer it over those little razor craft knives for certain kinds of detailed work.) And, if you shop at Wal-Mart, really cheap too.

Last time I went to Alaska I was carrying a Busse Basic 9 for chopping, brush, etc. and a Buck/Strider 888 Solution in BG-42 for smaller stuff. I had a SAK, multitool, a couple other folders, and maybe a fillet knife (can't recall). Also had a saw and full-size Estwing axe (didn't want the other guys beating up my Gransfors axes!). I wasn't travelling especially light, as you can see.

My group was rafting, hiking from base camps, and fishing. If I had been on a hunting trip, my choices would have been different.

Yes what will you be doing there?Staying in hotels or backpacking for days in the mountains?

Back in "the day" I used to go on canoe trips (unguided) in places such as the Yukon and B.C. .I carried a sak and a Shrade lb7(Buck 110 clone),to be honest I mostly used just the sak.But we had an axe,and Swen saw in the canoe for fire wood and clearing sweepers.

Today I would take,a sak with saw, serrated Delica (cutting lines in an emergency)and a stout fb like the BK 7.If I was on land swap out the Delica for my Case Trapper.

Enjoy and remember all the photos you see of the sky and sun up there are taken on the one day a year it isn't cloudy or raining.;)

Thanks for the all the info guys. I will be spending the majority of my time hiking and fishing. I will be spending about 2 weeks in the wilderness, absorbing as much as I possible can.

Rob

Well, the mosquitoes may be absorbing as much of you as they possibly can... :D

For the type of trip you are planning, I prefer to have a heavy, workhorse blade (in my case a Busse Steel Heart) and a smaller, utility type or two (in my case also Busse's).

What are you fishing for and where do you plan to be in general?

Lone Hunter,

Pardon the off-topic inquiry, but where did you canoe in the Yukon? I've done the MacMillan, the Big Salmon (twice), the Snake/Peel, the Hyland, and a couple others I can't fully recall. I'd like to do the Bonnet Plume, the Wind, the Hess, the Mountain, and the river that flows into the Beaufort see near the old island whaling station (can't recall the name).

I would be taking a Straight Handled Battle Mistress form Busse.
And a Large Plain Sebenza from Chris Reeve.
That will take care of all of your needs. Anywhere on the planet.
:)

i would be taking my GB hunters axe, big enough to build a camp and whatever else you need done small enough to pack easily. also my knives of alaska brown bear combo set i could get by with just these if i had to, will prepare food, camp chores, and a filet knife to handle the fish unless you are going to catch and release. a sak, a large folder or a large fixed blade would be ok. are you on some kind of guided trip, or is this just you and your buddies? if so you may need to divide up who brings the axe and saw, and you rknife selections might be a little different. i have hunted alaska a couple of times. great place!!!!!
