I know there are several members that know the area so aside from the obvious visit to Golden what are some don't miss sights or restaurants to see?
My wife will be with me it's our anniversary and we just wanted to get out of town . We are both very outdoor oriented so it seemed like a good place to go for the weekend.

Food blows, but go to Casa Bonita http://casabonitadenver.com. South Park did a whole episode about the place. Coors Brewery has a nice tour and is close to the Spyderco Factory. Downtown has quite a few good restaurants and is nice to just walk around. If you are looking for breakfast I highly recommend Davies Chuck Wagon Diner....I do not live in Golden any more, but have always eaten there since I was little and when I head back to see family, I try to get there at least once. Casa Bonita and Davies are both on Colfax Ave.

Also I can't remember the road, but you can do a nice loop up in the mountains that show a fantastic view of Golden and the Coors Brewery.

For an anniversary I would avoid Casa Bonita like the plague. It's a great place to go if you like IBS.

The 16th street market area might be with a look. Free busses go up and down that road and there are lots of places to eat along the street. The river walk is at the end of the bus route.

Thanks keep them coming
We may have to try Casa Bonita just on a day other than our anniversary. We have 4 days to mess around so we can go pretty much wherever so any of the ski resort towns could be a day trip.

Yeah, I missed the anniversary part....Casa Bonita would probably kill your marriage. :D

As for jtoler_9 ......CB will not give you IBS....food sucks, but it is not poison.

Mt Evans is pretty close by, and is a nice drive - you can't drive all the way to the top as it's closed for winter, but might be a nice outing/hiking, etc:

There are some hot springs close by in Idaho Springs - never been to them, but if that's your kinda thing, you might check it out.
Any of the canyons from Golden to Boulder are always a nice drive - most have pull offs to picnic, etc.
Pearl Street Mall in Boulder is usually interesting, especially on the weekends. :)
Happy Anniversary, and hope you have a nice trip!

Check out Boulder.

The Pearl street mall (down town) is always cool.

Here are a couple of my favorite places:

Breakfast: Lucile's Creole Cafe down town
Lunch: Rueben's Burger Bistro down town
Dinner: Jax Fishhouse down town (there's a Jax in Denver too)

If you are interested in doing a cool hike you can hike up the historic flatirons. Look up Chautauqua Park -- it's 5 minutes from downtown Boulder and the trails are great. It's not a real serious or strenuous hike, the round trip hike is only a couple hours and the views are incredible.

Casa Bonita sucks and so does 16th street mall. Bleck! I don't want to spend one minute on the mall or at caca dont-eat-it. You can go to a nice coffee shop or drive through the mountains.

I went to college in Golden, and recently visited with the family. The town has changed a lot over the years. We hit the Spyderco factory and picked up a few new toys for me, my wife, and gifts for a few folks. The people there were great.

For food: Mannie & Bo's still serves fantastic pizza, but may fit into the category of "dive" as opposed to someplace to go on your anniversary. Bonus - the Spyderco factory store _used_ to be across the street from the restaurant. I bought my wife her first knife there (a long time ago).

Another option I have not been to in years is the Briarwood Inn. It is more in line with an occasion... but about an order of magnitude more expensive than Mannie and Bo's.

There is also the Fort, which is near Golden, and they used to serve exotic meats :elk, rattlesnake, rabbit, ostrich (all good). It was really good years ago, and Presidents and the G10 leaders have dined there in the past.

Hope that helps.

I really don't know much about denver or Colorado in general, but when I was younger i stopped in Manitou Springs for about 2 days on my way through colorado. I definitely want to take my wife there some day. Look into it. I think it would make a great day trip

I CAN STOP LAUGHING. It has been 10 minutes already
my cat is giving me that WTF looks

I love Casa Bonita. Also after last call at Toms Diner, Denver Diner or Pete's Kitchen. (which holy crap those places are awesome!) Also if you like music, Wax Trax on thirteenth street is a great place to find good stuff. If you want to hit the clubs, I suggest The Church and Vinyl, also Funky Buddha Lounge is a good place to go too.

Just an update.
I am not a city guy so Denver was pretty cool in some ways but not really my thing.
However I drove 285 to 9 and down 24 and that was just an amazing drive . Checked off on the Spyderco bucket list factory visit and picked up a Domino. I paid a bit to much but it was cool to visit and I couldn't leave empty handed. Lunch in Breckenridge very cool
Colorado Springs was probably my favorite Garden of the Gods,Pikes Peak etc and the beer was great everywhere.

The only thing that sucked was I ended up in some kind of hipster hell near the big REI store. We were hungry and the REI guy told us to go to some restaurants close by.
Needless to say never trust a bearded man in red skinny jeans. Was asked for reservations by some fat snotty fem-boy host at at ale house at 6:45pm kinda weird.
Not sure what area that was considered but I will avoid it.

Overall a great state. I can see why the "natives" can't stand the out of state people moving in. Once you leave the city it's amazing but it's pretty much a Starbucks hipster hell inside of it. I can see why the recent votes of gun laws etc have gone the way they have. I was really surprised how hippy liberal most areas were.

Thanks for the travel tips guys Colorado as a whole is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
