I'm picking up some g10 and Cf scales to make some custom handle scales for my knives and was wondering if anyone has some tips or can direct me to some previous thread (I searched, but couldn't find anything).

I'm getting some Blue+black g10, jade green g10, digi cam g10, and blue and black cf.

Thanks guys.

Get a respirator that is rated for those materials. Use it.

Use sharp tools. G10 will dull them quickly. It ruined a bi-metal bandsaw blade after one set of small scales.

+1 on the sharp tools. G10 will even eat up carbides in relatively short order. Expect to have to replace your cutters much more rapidly than with micarta or similar materials. Abrasive belts will be highly effective, but the dust will be heavily fibreglass-loaded, you don't want to breathe it, or get it on your skin. Mask, long-sleeve work shirt, and a good shop-vac will help a lot there. Get a couple spare drill bits when you pick up your supplies, too.

What kind of knives are you making scales for? Folders? Fixed? I've done some scales for my Benchmades and cutting everything for the axis lock was a bit more work. If you're doing folders, I recommend you get the proper sized stepped drill bits from KnifeKits.com - they make perfect holes with just the right counter bore for pivot and back spacer screws. I did a more detailed write up on over on the devil of the steps I used (scroll to the end):

Gee, that was the most important advice you could get, and you dissed it. In all fairness, you didn't say anything about your level of experience or what is "obvious" to you.

Show a little gratitude toward a fellow knife fan who bothered to take the time to offer a reply.
