Yes folks, this Kansas boy is headed to Boston. What do I need to know? Went and purchased "Boston for Dummies," doing some internet searches etc. but wanted to hear from those of you have have been there or are there.

Will be doing the carry on luggage thing, so a cheap disposable throw away pocket knife will be at the top of the list.

Will have to check out Fenway park for sure. Games are supposed to be sold out, but I guess there are tours too.

Subway, what a terrifying thought!

what are you interests? I pretty much hate going into Boston because I hate crowds.

After 9/11, you can't carry a knife with a blade over 2.5'' in Boston proper. The chance this law will actually be enforced is minimal.

The most important thing to know about Boston is that it is, at heart, a college town.

You can get scrod

They have medicine for that nowadays...

Ok, here's my take, The Duck tours are fun, the walking tour through the cemetary and by Paul Revere chuch is fun. Acquarium is fun, science mueseum is supposed to be fun but I haven't been.

You can go to the theatre distict and see something. You can wander around chinatown. Stroll in the commons, take a duck boat ride. Go to Charlestown and tour the navey yard and the ships that are there. You can take a nice stroll along the Charles river.

You can just wander around back bay or etc. is cool too. You can make a day or 1/2 day trip to places like concord, salem, glouchester, etc. Go whale watching possibly.

The subways are noisy stinky armpits with peeling paint and crumbling concrete, but they're still better then driving.

I highly suggest the DUCK tour and a trip into Salem. Bunker Hill was pretty informative as well. The Aquarium was very cool and the kids enjoyed it. Definitely check out Fenuil Hall; lots of shops. If you want good chowda' check out Ye' Olde Union Oyster House. Also check out the Holocaust Memorial right across the street from the restaurant.

The Prudential Center would be a good choice if you want to find some nice restaurants and shops, and then get robbed $10 a person to go on the skywalk. There's also a knife shop hidden by a GAP (the knife store is down some stairs under the street).

You need to check out the Science Museum. It gets old if you've been there as often as I have, but it's full of terrific stuff. Make sure you stick around for the lightning show--they have the world's largest Van De Graff generator. Kaboom!

Charlestown Navy Yard is good, but the last time I was there the lines to the Constitution were so long I should have brought a tent to wait in.

You can always get Sox tickets from scalpers or ticket agents. Sometimes cheap, especially if they're playing a team no one cares about. Take public transportation. The T's getting better.

Oh yeah, Salem Beer Works.

Same here, but the wife is going all expenses paid, and I have a chance to go along. We have not been anywhere just the two of us since we had kid(s) 20 something years ago.

So I am taking a chill pill and going. Sounds like the duck tours are a possibility. Was looking forward to lots of walking, but as fate would have it she (the wife) tore a miniscus or something in here knee a couple of weeks ago. She got a steroid injection in it the other day to get her by until we get back.

Thanks for the feed back.

Oh, I thought I had scrod once, but it turned out to just be a jock itch. ;)

Good sounding suggestions. I know I will have at least some partial days by my self as my wife attends her confenences. I don't do lines very well, but thats ok, I am a cheap date and am looking for some time away.

I always liked the Boston Aquarium and pints of stout at the Black Rose afterwards.

What's the name of the historic walking tour in Boston? Is it the Freedom Trail? Whatever it's called, that's a good way to spend some time too.

The legal blade length is 2.5 inches. The drivers are insane!! There is a knife shop that is down some stairs at Phaniel (sp) Hall. DO get yourself some Clam Chowdah whilst you are here!

Come to Salem, then stop by and buy one of my knives. Best trip ever! hahaha jk...

Id hit fanueil hall, then museum of science, take a walk along the charles, then head north for stops at salem, rockport artisans section, then maybe a drive up mt washington or thru the kangamangus.....

The USS Constitution, in the Charlestown Navy Yard, is one of the coolest things ever. However, they will NOT let you on with a knife of any size, nor will they hold the knife for you.

If you are a woman, you could go for a ride with our senior senator.
He doesn't live too far from Boston.

Of course, be careful on those bridges.

That was toooooooooo funny!! I LOVE it!! And make sure you CAN swim, in case of the afroementioned bridges! I saw him when I worked for Hy-Line Cruises Security, drunk as a skunk!(The ferries that go to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.)

I could spend all day hanging around Quincy Market and the Boston Common, pay no attention to drunks and panhandlers, they go with the territory:D

Just wanted to say thanks to all who replied here and via email.

Here is the Kansas country boy take Boston.
  1. Had a good time, and didn't get everything done hoped for.
  2. Food ate - Scrod, Cream pie, Baked Beans, Itialian in the old north church neiborhood, and of coars chowda.
  3. Fenway park was great. Been seeing it on tv since a kid and loved being there. Wearing my coopers town addition Red Sox cap right now if fact. Took the tour, could have got tickets but the wifes bum knee ruled out a game. Oh well.
  4. The quincy market and fenuil shopping area was fun.
  5. Checked out Harvard and Boston College.
  6. Subways were an adventure in themselves for me at least.
  7. The harbor area was great to see. Rode a ferry just to say I did it.
  8. Messenger bags, wow. Everyone there has one. Not sure what were in them though.
  9. Yes, the drivers there drive by "Boston Rules," what ever they are. Lots of horn honking.

Glad I went. Would go back once more to see a game and a couple of other attractions I didnt have time for.

Thanks again to all.
