Going to buy my first Sebenza, Classic or Newer version? Why?

You'll most likely get several detailed versions of which one to get and why. I personally like the large classic 2000 sebbie. The ergonomics of the knife seem to just lock it in my hand and the 3 1/2" blade is just right size for everyday use and LEGAL carry. I also like the slimmer blade on the classic. I've gutted deer with a small sebenza; it worked fine, but seemed just a little too small. I won't draw this out, but if you get a chance to hold both of the large in hand before purchasing, you will no doubt see how the classic is much more user friendly. Have fun

FWIW, I've got a Photopoint Album with pictures comparing the Classic vs. Standard Large Sebenzas.

I personally like the feel of the Classic's handle better, especially it's fingerguard. The Classic has a sleeker and "pointier" profile blade while the Standard's blade has more belly to it.

Overall I like the Classic more...

Go with the Classic.

The grip is definitely more ergonomic and love the aggressive look of the blade !

Go with the Standard.

It's grippier to hold and love the better belly and stouter point.

I see this becoming a "better tasting" ... "less filling" battle.

I guess I'll be the dickweed who gives you the obligatory answer: it doesn't matter because sooner or later you'll own both.
Tiresome, I know...but someone had to do it.

I don't own a Sebenza....YET, but my vote is for the classic 2000. I just know that it's the "ONE".

I like the standard, wood inlay is Sebenza at its best. But might as well get both cause you can't just have one! Either way you will be very satisfied!

Less filling... er, I'm with Nimrod's belly and stouter point preference. I can see how others might feel the older design's handle is preferred, but I have no real qualms with the newer one either. It be duh belly, mon.

In either case, you get a great knife and the best action and lockup in a production knife going (debates on Axis and other locks ensue despite irrelevance to thread).

Only problem... the all metal knife is a bit "cold" for my preferences. Both to touch, and to the looks. The wood inlays, while a bit spendy, mostly solve both aspects of "cold". At least find a computer or custom graphic you like to spice up an otherwise drab gray folder.

You need a large for when you know you gotta do some work, and the small for daily carry to the office if such pursuits apply to you.

I love the Classic model and am fairly indifferent to the 'new' model. I prefer the more clip point blade of the classic and the tapered handle that reminds me a bit of the coffin bowie handle. It fits my hand better. Also I prefer the thumb release area for the lock bar. The absence of those horrid notches is a plus plus plus!

Well thats that, I bet however that there is a majority in favour of the Classic model. Oh and as my MM Classic 6-50 is my first and only Sebi, I cannot be accused of harking back to the old days when knives were better and you could...

You would really have to handle both to decide.

I don't think you would be unhappy with either.

I have never handled the classic, but I am very happy with my standards.

You just won't know for sure until you try them both for yourself. It is a very personal thing...

Anybody ever thought about getting a classic handle with a standard blade or vice versa (standard with classic blade)?

I have a large sebenza with the classic handle and the standard blade, it truly is my working folder, but it is a little to big to carry at the office. It has a polished ATS-34 blade. I personally like the old handle on the large, my small sebbie has the new style handle, it feels really good in the hand for it's size. Not sure when my large was made, because it does not have the "classic" style blade. Just thought I would share.

Sebenzas are called so many different names, it's confusing.
I'm going to buy one. The picture I was looking at was of two small Sebenzas. One was labeled "Classic 2000 Sebenza". The other was labeled "Regular Plan Sebenza".
I liked the looks of the blade on the "Regular Plain Sebenza" the best. It seemed to have an eliptical shaped blade. (Kind of reminded me of a Spitfire's wing.) The blade on the "Classic 2000 Sebenza" looked more like a clipped point blade. I wish I knew for sure what the designations are, because I want to make sure I order the correct one the FIRST time around. Can anyone help me out here with the proper names or designatons? I'd really appreciate it. One guy told me that the only difference in the two was in the shape of the handles. I know that can't be right because I saw the picture. The handles ARE different, but so are the blades.

You're correct Will, the blades are of different styles. The standard Sebenza, which is the one I think you stated you wanted; it has a wider, clip point type blade, i.e., more blade for, lets say, skinning. The classic 2000 Sebenza is more of a fighter style. If you end up getting the small sebenza as opposed to the large, I don't think you will notice a big difference in the blade as much as in the handle. But a dealer will know the difference between the standard Sebenza and the Classic 2000. If you want the standard production one, I believe this is the correct name for the knife. You won't be disappointed with either. This will be the best knife you will ever buy, and I'm sure you will end up with more than one. Enjoy!

The problem I have with the classic profile is the sharp edges on the handle slabs right above the rear screw. From the comparison picture you can see that the classic has a slight upsweep to the handle from blade to the rear screw. When I grip the classic, the upsweep and sharp transition function to drive these rear edges into my palm, whereas the newer profile does not. In hard use this would be very uncomfortable, so I'm sticking to the latest design for my using knives.
