Going to China

About a week and a half ago I decided on a whim that I'm going to go to China. This weekend I'm headed to Shanghai city. Got some family in the city to visit, I'll probably stay there for a week or until I'm all partied out, then go to rural Shanghai to visit some more fam. Hoping to do a bit of hiking and maybe a bit of camping while I'm in the country, but apparently it's a lot more developed since I was last there, so we'll see.

From there I intend to jump on a train to Beijing, check out the forbidden city, the great wall and any other places of interest that are along the way. And party.

My friend asked me "why are you going all the way to china just to go to the bars and party, what do they have that we dont have here in Canada?" to which I replied "about 500,000,000 asian women" yeahhhhhhhhh

I'm really going to be flying by the seat of my pants for this whole trip, I haven't had any time to prepare, my itinerary is full of "maybe, perhaps, and blank spaces". I might be gone one month, maybe two. The uncertainty and aimlessness of this adventure makes it all the more exciting.

Any comments?

Have fun brudda. That sounds like an awesome trip! Take a bunch of pictures and stay safe!

Pretty cool. China is supposed to be awesome. I may actually going be to Beijing or Shanghai later this month myself, if I can get a Visa in time. I've always wanted to go there, and I'm going to be in Korea for a couple weeks anyway.

Make sure to take plenty of pictures!

Oh, and +1 for the asian chicks. Although I gather there is a pretty high sausage to kitty ratio in that country, with the "1 child" policy. If you want to head someplace where there are tons of HAWT asian chicks that like white guys, head to Seoul!

I just go to Queens, New York for that:D:thumbup::cool:

Seriously. It's great to get away and experience other cultures and ways of life!

Have a great time buddy:thumbup:

No camping or hiking near Shanghai sadly. If you haven't visited China in the past 5 years, the entire Pacific coast has been industrially built-out for at least a 4-hour drive inland. Remember that the pollution it is especially severe during summer.

If you want to go somewhere that is still 'green' and has some resemblance to "old China", add Hangzhou to your visit. It is a well-managed city that has less pollution and urban sprawl.

Where in Shanghai are your family? I've been visiting/working in China since 1985 and have seen Shanghai change from a city with only 1 working escalator (1986) to the skyscraper capital of the world.

Went to Hong Kong back in 2001 and had a wonderful time.
The only thing that sucked was the flight. 23 HOURS!!! nonstop!

I might have to buy a new camera when i get there, mines acting up. But either way, I plan to take a ton of pictures.

Moonwilson, it only took about 5 days to get my visa. If you're headed to beijing mid-late july you should shoot me an email, perhaps we'll meet up.

Last time I went was 10 years ago and rural shanghai was still pretty green, went on a nice day hike through the hills and farmland and some small villages.

I dont even know where in Shanghai they are. My grandma gave me a list of adresses, but it's all in chinese lol. Are you still in Shanghai CWL?

Any comments?

I found them by and large to be a fairly conservative race compared to Canadians.
But Tsing Tao is great beer and Shanghai is a party.
Learn how to say "Hello, you have pretty eyes" and it'll see you through. :p
It goes something like "nee how pleow yooung" and I'm positive that's nothing like it's spelt.
If you're doing it tough, just hit up the ladies over 5'5", the local boys don't tend to like them tall.
Damn I'm seedy.:D
If you've got the time, check out south east China, where all the crazy limestone kharst topography is; where every gung fu movie ever made was filmed.
Please excuse my spelling, my google's on the blink but I think it's called Gui Lin. Gong Zhao (sp?) is also beautiful.
If it's your thing you can shhot whatever you want in those parts too, heavy machine guns, rpg's etc.
And ask some ex-pat about gummies.

Enjoy your trip and maybe get that new camera so as we who live vicariously can enjoy it too. :D

From what I understand the german magnetic levitation train has airport style security screenings. The reason that few ride it maybe it only 10 km and practically goes nowhere. Another maybe people are just plain scared for their safety on a train that's magnetic powered and goes over 400 km per hour.
