GOING TO CUBA, anything i should get to be prepared for anything?

Lots of small bills to hand out as bribes? Maybe a pack of 20 led lights from county comm? ;)

It's illegal to pay with US dollars so be smart and exchange LOTS of US dollars in the cuban peso! :D

Man, the US dollar is the only hard currency there...

Actually, you're canadian so I assume the canadian dollar is pretty solid down there

I seem to recall somebody mentioning police at check-in at the airport can be PITA if they suspect you're getting one of thoseprivate rooms. However if one shows interest in (government-owned) hotels they're the nicest people on the globe. My conclusion: if you're unfamiliar with former eastern block regimes get ready for some serious official ass kissing.

i went in '95, was in jamaica and me and a bud took a flight, all we used was dollar$, imho some of the cigars we got were bogus (cuban and not bad for sure, what they were banded, cohiba, dont think so) but priced fairly cheap, dont even remember now, prob $3 or so each (yeah i know way too cheap for cohiba, didnt know then), and they were good, the rum was good too, and it was wayy cheap ($3 or so a bottle, for the better stuff) all in all it was ok, thought the food in jamaica and cuba sucked though FWIW............was kinda glad to leave to be honest, the place was depressing know one had any $$, old cars, glad i dont live there.

thanks for the info,

but actually they dont want us dollars anymore, its all pesos and canadian dollares :D

I know, Fidel made it illegal to pay in US dollars a few weeks ago. The US dollars are destabilising his country :D . Maybe u could bring some Euro's or travel with a large stash hidden inside a condom in your pants! Hey i'm just happy to see u, mr Cuban customs inspector. ;)

Buy cigars in the state stores. I've heard that the best and biggest get shipped overseas, so don't expect the mother lode, ironically (although this is intel from a few years ago when I was more into cigars than I am now). Evidently, crime is pretty nonexistant in Cuba because of the state controls, but I have heard from sources that, and this surprised me, that things are relatively expensive for what you get, hotel and restaurant staff don't give a **** about doing a good job, and people generally care less.

Stuff your suitcases with brake fluid. I understand the Cubans use vegetable oil in thier aging fleet of pre-embargo vehicles.

Don't drink the water.

Don't drink the water? You must be confusing Cuba for Mexico. Both countries are Spanish speaking, but are culturally and ethnically very different. Besides, it ain't the water you have to worry about. It's the mosquitos. :D
