... and was wondering if any of you guys knew where to go to find a decent knifeshop? I also would like to know if it´s possible to purchase balisongs there! I´ll be spending time in Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu, but I´m open to suggestions elsewhere as well!

Thanks for your time!

Niclas

Two or three years ago my friend wondered also if there was any knives to buy in Estonia. It appeared that there was at least a store that sold Chris Reeve Knives - so he thought that the store could have some other quality knives too. Problem was that the store was outside of Tallins centrum so my friend didn't have means to reach the store.
I don't think that you can find better stores in Tallin than in Stockholm. Only time I've visited Estonia (Tallin) Victorinox knives were as expensive in as in Helsinki (or only few percent cheaper)

If you find a nice place to buy knives inform us here @ BF.

Quite close. Viro = estonia is not the closest language to finnish (Karelian is) but of the bigger languages that belong to fenno-ugrian language family the closest. Problem with viro is that same word may mean different thing - completely different or just a bit off (but enought to cause misunderstanding).
One excemple of near meaning - not completely different but still is word book: in estonian raamattu means book but in finnish word raamattu means bible...
Finnish is more archaic language. Because of our location our language has had less contact with other languages than viro. In viro there are more loanwords than in finnish. Viro SOUNDS a lot like finnish but if I was travelling in Estonia I'd speak english to avoid misunderstandings.
People in Tallin area understand Finnish quite well as during Soviet times Finnish television was the channel for people to see western life - In coastal viro Finnish TV was/is visible.

It's probably easier to get here than in Estonia,
but Kellam's J-line (Jarvenpaa?) includes the very pretty Estonian independence puukko:

.

Thanks for your input guys! My fiancée (not sure about the spelling on that one!) is from Estonia, so that´s why we´re going. Been there a few times before, but not like this! I asked my gf, she´s a lawstudent, about the knife-laws, and it appears, after alot of searching the web, that it´s illegal to buy/own/carry balisongs as well as autoknives. But I´ll be sure to check around anyways!

I´ll post back when I return if I find a decent shop!

Thanks again

Niclas

Veratio, I think it's always best to see if you can find any quality local knives, especially local styles, in another country. The major production brands you can find almost anywhere.

I forwarded your post to russian knife forum. This is the answer:

Сам по интернету заказываю и в Италлии прикупил пару. Но так себе бабочки есть в магазине Jahipaun что в магазине Prizma . Призм в таллине несколько поэтому надо идти в ту призму, что самя близкая к Аэропорту, это их центральный магазин и спросить Meelis или Hanno.
-------------------------------------
There are no really good balisongs there - he prefers Italian, but there are few good ones in Jahipaun shop which is part of Prizma mall. The closest to Airport Prisma.
Ask for Meelis or Hanno. They have Andijar's balisong right now, a lot of Spyderco, Gerber, Roselly etc.
I hope I did correct translation in some kind of English. ;)

This is Jarvenpaa website (Kellam-J line)
http://www.iisakkijarvenpaa.fi (sorry in finish)

Thanks,
Vassili.

That is amazing! You really went out of your way to try to help! I´m writing this down, and I´ll see what happens when I get there! Much appreciated sir!

Take care

Niclas

BTW it is legal to OWN balisongs in Finland (not to carry). I've seen some cheap ones for sale in some shops. I guess that if someone would sell microtechs in finland (there used to be a hunting equipment store that sold) tachyons would cost at least 300 euros.

The writer specifically says that he orders online instead of shopping in Tallinn. (Hm...sound familiar?) :)
He also says that are several "Prizma" malls in Tallin. The one near the airport is the main one.
(Is that how Estonians write Russian BTW? What is the business about babochki?)

Take Esav's advice -- try to find some nice local stuff.

Babochki - batterflies, other name of ballisong knives. Mark Luchin, who answer this question, is russian.
He sad he preffers italian balisong as the best, but can only buys it over internet. There are some good batterfly knives in Jahipaun...
BTW - if you read and write russian this is a russian knife forum:
