Heya Becker-Peoples,

Soooo...with Christmas on the way, I decided to treat myself this year!! I want something to go with my little but super versatile Bk-11. Now, I want a knife that, like the Bk-11 I may legally EDC, but also to be versatile but different. I know alot of you guys and gals EDC your Beckys -- Eskabars, 11/14/15/16s.. I'm thinking that, as per my usual, I feel most comfortable with a smaller blade. I had an idea after helping a buddy of mine. He brought me a Bk-2 which I shortened, slimmed, and convexed for him. I ground it down. I named it "Little Big Prybar". Now, there's my own problem...I won't carry a knife which I cannot legally EDC. I was thinking maybe I could modify a 2 and thereby shorten it enough that I could EDC it.

I also see no real need for a knife more than 4 and a half or even 4 and three quarters. :-) If that would suffice...I've got quite a few little adaptations planned for a Bk2 -- I think down to a 4 3/4 cutting edge would be sufficient.

Finger Choil to shorten the blade, increase control, but also if roughed would make an efficient "edge" for a ferro rod. Shallow but deep enough.
Convex the edge the first two 3/4 edge, scandi the last 2 in.
Flatten, roughen, a patch of spine for scrapping wood powder.
Grind down to a thicker point...Pry-worthy.
Grind a notch in the center of the pommel (wire-breaker--yes, Bk-11 inspired :D)
Grind down the bottom right end of the pommel into an edge (will likely regret that) Auxillary edge, small, short..efficient to slice a cord
or string.
Micarta scales....O-o
Liners

This seems as if it would efficiently shorten the blade without having to be drastic, while also giving it a heavy increase to versatility. Hehe..if I don't lose a finger in the attempt, I'll call it the "Woodsman". If I don't bung it up, it'd almost be like a custom-made knife.. Hehe..that SHOULD make a "Do-it-all" knife. That'd be great to have to work with. Any other ideas or suggestions?

It all sounds nice except grinding the bottom right end of the pommel down to an edge. You would probably cut yourself on it a lot if you did that.

Your place of residence has it's own laws, but in Florida I can open carry any fixed blade, and at 21 (18 if enlisted) with a conceal carry permit I can conceal them as well.

Now, I will say this, while your planned mods sound like they will be very useful, you should be VERY wary of that much grinding, it can very easily destroy the heat treat on the blade, and your warranty will be far voided.

As far as a 4 3/4" blade goes, the 16/17 are the perfect size for you.

As oxide pointed out with ruining the heat treat, I think it would be good to dip it in water every now and again while grinding.

I was also thinking it sounds like you might as well go with a BK16... that's an aweful lot of work to put into makeing a BK2 that much smaller.

I gotta say that a 16 might just be what you are after.......If you had to shorten it up, it would be several orders of magnitude easier and although I LOOOOVE the two, I am not sure I would want to EDC it around town.......If you are permitted to carry it, a 16 in an IWB sheath would be hardly noticed by you or a casual observer.......Just my two cents.....

I really gotta echo what I said earlier (and what Uncle Malic and Uncle E just said), just get a 16 or 17 and you don't need to grind it down nearly as much. And you can keep your pants up.

True :-) (16 was my first instinct) Hehe...I just enjoy modifying. Oh, I hand grind with sandpaper and files, I never use machines. It's a slow process so the steel rarely even gets hot to the touch, let alone that hot. Yup, I know my areas laws very well :D (wanted to be a Cop at one time, but had an accident and damaged my knee.) Ah, but I really enjoyed working on that knife for my friend, and seeing how pleased he was with it. Thanks to Mr.Becker's knives, I've gotten to where I can sharpen and hone knives, modify, convex. I learned a trade from them, in a sense. As for the pommel, nah, my hands are too tough lol--swinging an axe since you were little will do that. :-) I believe Mr.Becker said he wanted many years for the 16, and I can see why :-).

In my area, we have open-carry...so I can carry pretty much anything, so long as it is clearly visible. That, to me, is extremely vague. What if it's on my left side, and the officer is looking at me from my right side? That's not visible. Ugh... I don't know what to do. Plus, my phone is still goofed up..haven't been able to call out (if I could I'd call and ask some cops I know). Hmmm...I wonder, if the modifications were done well, if people would buy or trade for a knife like that? Ugh......to be honest......that to me is so vague, "Clearly visible"...that I don't want to carry even a multi-tool anymore.. Tennesee has a 4in law..mine has open-carry..but it's flippin' vague. I think it should be stated, "So long as the knife is worn openly on the belt, and remains uncovered by any articles of any kind, to include clothing.."

Oh, btw, I split a 6x6 piece of oak yesterday with my Bk-11 (Which is now, in my eyes, one seriously tough knife!)...made a deep notch on both the right and left sides...and then drove it down the center. Three hits..and it split all the way down, enough that I could pry apart with my hands. Such a fantastic knife...Bks all the way for me.

Thank you for your reply, Mr.Ethan :-) Still trying to get my phone fixed. Hope you have a good morning!

Hey Bored......

Good luck with your choices......Remember how much leeway the cop has at the "point of sale".........LOL......Discretion is good........

Ethan

I know, right? Discretion is always advised. But the 16 is fairly large as well. It's an over 4 in. blade. Would the little bit over count, really? Hmmm. Okay, I've gotten sound advice so far... I never get into trouble of any kind, anywhere--I am always friendly, I tend to smile and nod if people look at me in passing. So, by discretion, you mean to carry openly but not openly? By that, I mean, carry openly but discreetely in a manner in which it won't draw attention (i.e..no scales, completely uncovered, black sheath against black clothing)? Wouldn't IWB be technically concealed? I've been hold that only the handle needs to show. LOL.....I'm so confused. :-) I'm getting hungry...that becker/bacon post is killing me.. :-) Always fun chatting with you, Mr.Becker, you're a wise man.

*Hehehe...a Bk-2 isn't the only thing that'll yank your pants down...a Leatherman Surge will too...and I had it clipped to my jogging pants! Caused me to do a flying face-plant in on gravel..
*Idk..I think the 2 could be okay EDC if no scales..maybe wrapped tang. Yea, it's heavy..but it's only an inch above the 16, and only .25 above the ..15?
I like the idea of an EDC 2 due to vehicle accidents...pommel plus edge plus thickness--sharpened glass-breaking pry-bar. ...I was in a severe vehicular accident last year, and two of my cousins were recently killed in a vehicle accident. Hehe..that things about a pound of steel..

Hmmm...well...75 plus bucks just for a piece of steel to modify isn't worth it..(Though, 75 bucks for a Bk-2 would be ;-) ) Hmmm...I'm thinking I'll just stick to my Bk-11. Lol..to much confusion for my brain.. Lol..I always shorten to reinforce the points on knives anyway, I hate those little thin pointy-points. God, I hate the points on Buck 110's... It is alot of work, especially by hand....I should've made that geek trade me something in return. :-)

A pocket sheath, so long as the knife is clearly visible (from the general direction it's in), should be more than legal. And if it's on your belt to your left side and the officer is on your right and he calls it concealed, I would call BS in court.
