Hi Everyone, Well next March I'm going to go to Guatemala for a week to help with a large group of Doctors and Residents. We will be going to several small towns to give medical care to the citizens who live there. I carry a pocket knife everyday (traditional type) here in Kansas, but I'm a little concerned about doing that in Guatemala and going through Customs. I will be carrying with me a fairly large amount of medical supplies to assist in the work. Does anyone know about knife laws going in to Guatemala and while I am in the country. can you help me out?

i only have experience on the el salvador and guatemala border, but here is what i learned...

if you dont speak spanish, i recommend don't bring one. if you can explain you are a doctor, then u may get some leway. guatemala "lower classes" still have a beef with americans - and that has permeated the lower levels of police in some areas.

if it was me, i would carry, but be wary, and keep a $10 or $20 nearby. i carried a kabar for protection, in sheath, on the hip and when i was stopped at a checkpoint i said what it was for, gave the guy $10 and all was gravy (luckily he wasnt insulted).

Law in those regions is heavily governed on a personal basis, so a proper answer is near impossible. good luck.
