Hi all,
I am going to be in KC later this week and just heard ICCE will be there for show. I don't own a custom knife and think it is about time I buy one. Given I can go to the show I thought I would ask for a couple of suggestions to see if I can find one to buy at the show. I am interested in a couple of options:

First would be a flipper that can be used everyday when away from work. Looking for a blade length of ~3.5 inches. Not necessarily wanting a tactical look but definitely want something that can be used. Right now I carry a CRK 25. Bearings in the pivot or some other mechanism for fast flipping into would be preferred.

Second, I am considering a "Gentleman's Knife". Maybe a little shorter blade (2.5 - 3.0 inches). Something I can carry in an office setting. Right now I mostly carry a William Henry B10 Lancet to the office. I want something that can be opened one handed.

For both I want pocket clips and typically like lanyards. The option to use a lanyard is not a requirement. I would want good steel but no necessarily Damascus. Key for me (especially for the flipper which will get the most use) is the ability to hold an edge. I have a Wicked Edge I will use to maintain the edge.

Any suggestions for either of the two custom knife options I am considering from makers who will have a table at the show?

Thanks in advance.

There will be plenty of those styles of knives available and you should be able to find about any style or size....see you there. [emoji106]

When someone says gentleman's folder, first person I think of is Johnny Stout; he'll be there and his knives are incredible. Don Hanson III is another for an amazing gentleman's folder. You are going to a show with many of the best knifemakers in the world so there will be a lot of really nice stuff. I think the main thing is to spend a lot of time talking to makers and asking questions about the knives that catch your interest.

Thanks Bob, but I'd put Cliff Parker above me in the Gents Folder category. He'll be there with 6-7 knives.

For the flipper, I highly recommend Bruce Bingenheimer (AKA Bing) I own four of his flippers and carry one of them everyday. You can search here on BF and see his newest flippers. I know he is making some for ICCE. Find him early. Gentleman's folders Stout, Hanson, Parker, and many others come to mind. You will have plenty to view and handle during this show. Have fun!

Yep, you will be like a kid in the candy store. Enjoy!

I wont have anything like you're looking for but please stop by my table and say hello.

Some good advice here.

Lin- your knives are the type that everyone is ALWAYS looking for. They just don't always know it yet. ;)

Don- you're right; Cliff makes some of the finest gents carry folders around. But what gentleman pirate wouldn't kill to have your pearl handled cutlass folder in his good 'sunday-go-to-pillagin' pantaloons? :D

Same could be said about your folders, John! What's not to like about a great looking folder in W2! Love em!

Unfortunately Mr. Bingenheimer will not be attending but he makes a superb folder, I would love to hang around with him but it won't be this time around.

I wondered about that. He was not on the list of makers.

Flippers may be in relatively short supply compared to what you would find at many other shows. Two makers whose tables I would check out if I was looking for a flipper are Michael Vagnino and Todd Begg. But personally, if I was in the market for a flipper this is not a show where I would go looking.

"Gentleman's knives" likely will be everywhere. Way too many makers to list. To some extent it depends on what you are willing to spend . . . I expect you will find them from a few hundred $ to a few thou$and. I have some favorites, but a lot of it is just personal taste. I am thinking that you will find so many good options that your head will be spinning.

Bing went to the USN show and decided not to attend the ICCE this year. Two shows WAY too close together for him, especially as busy as he is with commissioned work. He was pretty strung out on shows this year as it was. He's mentioned possibly attending ICCE next year.

Don't sleep on Bob's knives either. The man is making WAVES!

I also believe Jerry Moen will be there, and his Blue Max is one heckuva flipper.

Thanks all for the feedback. Seems like there will be plenty of options to consider while in Downtown KC later this week. I appreciate everyone taking time to respond.

Very kind of you Dave. Is a personal check ok?

Seriously though, I was looking at the table holders list and there are some tactical guys; Sean O'Hare, Todd Begg, and (as mentioned) Jerry Moen's Blue Max would certainly qualify as a tactical. I'm sure there are others but these stood out to me.

Lots of world class makers will be there. All of the makers that have commented, were mentioned, and many others are top shelf.
Take a pocket of cash and get a piece of Americana that you can pass down. I'll bet one will jump out and speak to you. Have fun.

HA! No payment needed.. but a lefty version of what I pictured would do nicely ;)

I really don't count Begg's knives as custom really. I would classify them as more of a high-end production or mid-tech.
Peter Martin's work is also amongst my favorites. Along with just about all the people listed above.

Seriously, just write down the names of the guys who posted in this thread alone and visit their tables. That should put you on the right track.
