am going with my 14 year old son. With Charter Ministries. We will be building 20 homes in Mexico for the week of Thanksgiving. Currently Andrew and I are in the process of gathering the financial support. Each person is asked to raise enough cash to build one home..( approximate $1000 per house) Some generous family and my own pocket book are financing this venture.

I am doing this because it is very important for my teenage son to see how the other half lives..and to remind him that inspite of what he sometimes thinks our family is blessed beyond compare. I am also doing it to show him that words are not enough in this world but people of action change the world for the better. Talk is cheap..love on the other hand is priceless...

so we are kind of pumped up I will be a big adventure for my son who has never done anything like this..

VERY cool Ren! You and your son should be commended for this selfless action!

Living life just above the poverty level in Puerto Rico has actually done my son a world of good. He had an untirely unrealistic view of how things should be, before being sent to a military academy there. Since deciding to leave the academy, and make his way on his own for a time, he has learned both humility, and hard work, are required for a 19 YO 'adult' to make a contribution to family and community. I just wish we could have started his lesson a little earlier, as you are. Good luck Ren, and be safe! Hopefully the area you will be working in will be a friendly one towards americans. Even knowing the North part of the Island fairly well, I had to 'badge' a group of aggressive teenagers in PR looking for a shakedown, and my son just experienced the same thing. Three to one, and he came away, luckily, with only a split lip and a learning experience.

I guess there are no construction workers left in Mexico? :D

Have a fun and safe trip! Sounds like a wholesome and man-ly father-son activity. Plus he'll get valuable hands-on experience and hopefully pick up some useful skills.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

Let's see....

Mexicans are rebuilding New Orleans and the gulf coast...

Americans are rebuilding Mexico...

What a strange world we live in.

I agree whole heartedly, Dann, but it is commendable nonetheless. Helping anyone is a good act. There in spirit for support. I always try to help out locally, but any help is good help.

I did that same thing in the 3rd World about ten years ago. I came back home thinking I could build houses!! But, I guess being able to stack cinder blocks on top of each other and fastening a tin roof to them is not considered "up to par" here in the states (unless you are an Appalachian American) :D Way to go, and have fun!

This is the kind of education that no school can give.
The fact that Ren and his son can do this together is priceless.
I suspect that this trip will lead to cherished memories for both of you.

I would if I could but Charter ministries has been building homes in Mexico for years before Katrina..I do not have the luxury of choosing where I want to go on this mission..

keep safe , have some fun and bond with your kid while you can-
you will bolth have stories for the rest of your lives to share with each other -very cool

It would be nice to help fellow Americans, but this is a trip that will mean more to you and your son than going to the beach, the mountains etc. This is a teaching experience for both of you, and when you see the faces of the men, women and children that you have built a home for, you will be extremely happy. Thinking about my response, no, you do not have the luxury of choosing where you wanted to go, God did. You know I'm not a thumper Ren, but I hope you know what I mean.

via con Dios, and have a good time with your son Ren. One day if I can raise the cash I would like to take my boy on a work an witness trip to south america, africa or somewhere, well enjoy.

That is awesome Ren!! God bless you and your son!!! I wish I wasn't unemployed and broke as I would love to send you some money to help support you trip, but I can't. I am truely sorry. You have my prayers and love. That is the best I can do for now.

I hope you and your son will have a fun time there. Since this is a knife forum, are you bringing any knives to there? If so, what kind?

have a good trip and enjoy your time with your son, and try not to nail yourself to anything. later, ahgar

That's great. I appreciate the spirit of volunteering. Y'all will do some good work and it will be Ren and Andrews Excellent Adventure, too.

Hey, do you need passpports to travel to Mexico now?

Ah, ya can't fool me Ren... you're just going down there for the cheap Tequilla and Donkey shows!;) :D

(sorry, couldn't resist!) This is a fantastic thing you are doing Ren, just be careful... don't want to get seriously hurt in a third world country. You WILL need to research which knives you can bring in to Mexico. I have a vague memory of it being rather restrictive what you can bring in/possess on you. I'm pretty sure you don't want to spend ANY time in a Mexican jail.
