Hey Guys,
I'm going to NJ for a wedding next week. What kind of knife can I get away with ?
Living in Colorado now and I dont know the knife laws in NJ.
I am also going to NYC to see the tree. Do I need to me careful in NYC, with what I carry ?
Is a 4 inch blade too big ? or a 3 1/2 ?
Should I just carry a Stockman ?
Or I just got a Spydie meercat and pride they are small blades, I would think they should be legal ?
Also, I got my leatherman. I assume they are legal ?
Anybody know differant ?
Thanks
Jack

NJ has very vague statutes, no specific length limit, just some mention of "dangerous knives". I usually stay at about 3" length.

NYC is actually a lot better - very explicit legal folding blade limit of 4", which is bigger than anything I own.

I wouldn't go to the PRNJ for any reason.

New Jersey is the state that doesn't allow it's people to even own hollow point handgun ammo.

Their state police borrowed their uniform from the SS.

That said you should go to the law sources noted in the law forum to read the details but also realize that they are always open to interpretation. Take a knife that has a blade three inches or less and wear it discretely, you shouldn't have a problem.

Your knife and your Leatherman will have to fly in your checked bag so make sure they are hidden to avoid theft and don't pack a knife you can't easily replace.

Before I get flamed, there are some really nice places and people in NJ (and NY). I hope they regain their freedom.

I understand you are just trying to be lawful and I applaud your effort. I see these types of posts often in regards to laws of states they plan to visit. But honestly, in my opinion, unless you plan on raising hell while your there or committing other crimes, I wouldn't worry about it and carry your normal EDCs. :)

WAIT!!! You said Colorado huh?? Well OK, don't go carrying a bowie knife in NY or NJ :D

Also I can't imagine the Meerkat or Pride being illegal to carry anywhere, so you should be good to go with them.

New Jersey does not allow their Jurors to take notes during a trial. They cannot figure out why they have the highest incidence of bad calls and hung juries.

and if you even so much as drive through New Jersey; you will glow in the dark and your nads will fall off:eek:

We're ( www.njccw.com ) working on getting NJ back into the USA. In the mean time don't carry a gun, but I've never even remotely had any type of problem with a knife of any type. The gray area is eliminated by keeping it concealed.
Personally, if I were a predatory criminal, I'd rather my prey have a gun than one of my knives along with the evil thoughts that go along with it (towards predatory criminals).
Otherwise, New Jersey is outstanding and about 43% of the population is good to go. Hopefully we'll get that number up to 51% in time for the next election.
OK. I didn't want to do it, but I'll post my next editorial in the "Community" section (Political whatever) when my carpal tunnel simmers down a bit.

New Jersey has had some very enlightening court rulings regarding knives in general. You should be okay with any folder. Certainly, a Bowie should not be carried around generally, although I do see a number of them carried by day hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

roshi from TX is misinformed. NJ allows non-LEO's to have hollowpoints. I have a number of Winchester Silvertips in .45 ACP at home and shoot them regularly and legally at the range.

And Roshi is also misinformed about the uniforms of the New Jersey State Police. NJSP was first commanded by Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf Sr. NJNG (father of Gen. Schwartzkopf of Desert Storm fame). NJSP originated just after WWI, around 1921. The Gen. designed the NJSP uniform after those worn by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the French Gendarmerie infantry blue, based on his experience on the western front. The coat is cut in the RCMP manner. NJSP predates the SS by 10 or more years.

To this day NJSP and RCMP work together.

Welcome to New Jersey and enjoy your stay.

Here is what I was referring to.

SUPERIOR COURT OF NEW JERSEY
APPELLATE DIVISION
HUDSON COUNTY
A-58-96T4
STATE OF NEW JERSEY vs JIMMY LEE RILEY,
December 11, 1997

“We also noted ... that a pocket knife of just the type (4 inch folding knife) this defendant had in his pocket is, in fact, an implement which is commonly and regularly sold throughout the state as a matter of ordinary commerce. Thus, when it is not used or intended to be used as a weapon there is no contextual basis for concluding that it constitutes a weapon….”

I grew up in Jersey,(We don't say New Jersey), and as long as your not planning on getting really sh**ty with a LEO you dont have to much to worry about, keep under 3" , and no autos, or DA's.

As for the City,(NYC) on the street and in the restaurants and stores stay cool, and within the same Jersey guidelines, and you'll be fine.

Don't plan on visiting any Government buildings or major landmarks carrying anything that resembles a knife, leave it in the car or be prepared to lose it.

I did go to the Empire State Building recently and they did give me a claim ticket to pick my knife up on the way out, I saw people hiding their knives outside and throwing their knives in the garbage,(it was all junk)

One last thing for all you unhappy ex Jersey people, don't worry about anything east of the Delaware River, when the big earthquake comes, Jersey will just slide off into the Atlantic Ocean, and Pennsyvania will become the new East Coast, and I'll have Ocean front property. Just kidding,;) my Sis in law still lives there.

As long as you keep your nose clean and don't get into situations that will bring the police to you. . .you'll be OK !

If you're worried. . .like T. Erdelyi said. . .3" , and no autos, nor DA's.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I think I will carry my Uncle Henry stockman.
Havent decided about my leatherman.
Thanks Jack

it's only illegal if you're caught...

New Yorkers carry everything and you will even find that many NY'ers tuck an illegal piece in their belt to go out at night.

but if you want to go the safe route, anything as long as it's under 4 inches. Auto's, Bali's and double edge knives excluded (they're not legal at any length).

I've got a friend who carrys a small ruler with him at all times so that the cops don't try to take away his high end knives.

funny thing is, I've carried a tomahawk around Times Square and all over the city, in its' sheath and all it got was a funny look from the police lieutenant and the group of cops that were hitting on the tourist chicks.

Jack142 -

I've lived in NJ all my life & haven't regretted it! I don't 'glow' in the dark (not to my knowledge, anyway)! Never had a 'bad' run-in with the law for any reason especially not for a knife problem but my EDC is a small Schrade stockman. All I have to offer is when you're in NYC , don't go walking around going 'Oh' 'Ahh' and acting all touristy-like. Try to make it seem like you know where you're going & enjoy yourself! Let us know how you made out!
T. Erdelyi offered some real good info; you shouldn't have any problems. T. Erdelyi - did you grow up in Jersey or Joisey?

Good Evening, etc.
In case ya didn't leave yet, it sounded like you're still worried about carrying your Leatherman.
Don't be.
It ain't even gonna get a second look by police.. well, unless ya try and kill a mall full of teenagers with it.

As for the other knives... Many's the time I carried a Spydie Police Model (read: Big, scary knife) and had used it around police.
I should add that the police involved all knew I was a Firefighter/EMT, so I mighta got more grief were I not'nt one.

Still, that Leatherman ain't gonna get noticed unless you hit a place that has metal detectors. Not that I'm saying that a metal detector is there to divulge your dirty little secret (Leatherman) but just that places that have metal detectors installed just don't allow "weapons" of any kind inside.

Have a nice trip and be sure to drive down the NJ TPKE so's ya can smell the state. (Those smokestacks ya see are the ones from The Sopranos opening credits)

Off to fondle my full auto Uzi, as I am now a free badger,
I remain,
Me, Vampire Gerbil

PS - Roshi, you're correct that people ain't allowed to own hollowpoints in NJ, but that don't mean that every gun store doesn't offer every hollowpoint ya'd like, with the possible exception of Black Talons.
Yeah, ya can BUY 'em, but ya can't POSSESS 'em!
I was talking to the Nye Cty (NV) Undersheriff, I mentioned this inane law. He said that was as crazy as my NEW town's law where ya can BUY fireworks (we have two huge stores that sell 'em) but ya can't possess 'em here either!
Madness! I am surrounded by MADNESS!
But I still got my Uzi, suppressed, and carry concealed handguns out here... giggle-giggle-wharfgnot

Don’t worry too much about taking your knife or multitool to jersey. When in jersey, just NEVER stop at the rest stops, drink the water, eat the food, breath the air or touch anything, and you should be alright.

In NYC blades less than 4 inches are O.K., but they must be kept concealed. I would stay away form anything which could be confused with a switch blade or gravity knife.

I live in Jersey and I carry an AFCK (4 inch blade) at least twice a week. No one cares at work. I figure I don't plan on getting stopped by the police anytime soon. You can definitely get away with 3" and under. New Jersey isn't THAT bad...

T. Erdelyi - I work at tank farm, exit 12. I think I know some of your relatives? Don't think they're into knives, tho!

First off Guys,
I was born in NJ. So, I know about the smokestacks and smell etc. One of the reasons I moved to Colorado in 77.

T.erdelyi you gotta e mail me. We come from the same town, I lived off King Georges Rd in Fords.
Thanks
Jack

Regardless of where the NJSP got their uniforms, they seem to have gotten their attitude from the East German Border Police. The ones I had contact with had the attitude that everyone they meet is guilty until proven innocent. I used to have to drive in Jersey in a car with an out of state License plate.
