I will be going up to Ottawa, Ontario, in mid July and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for museums and other places of interest for me to visit. My wife will be attending a conference, but I will be footloose and fancy free for a few days.

Ottawa _IS_ a museum - except all the dinosaurs will have gone home to their ridings for the summer. ;)

Happy Canada Day, eh! :D

It's been many years since I've been to Ottawa. It has a number of attractions but in my opinion most of them would only be interesting to a Canadian.

Some museums you may find interesting are the Canadian War Museum, National Aviation Museum and the National Museum of Science & Technology.

First and foremost when visiting Ottawa is to go to the Parliament Buildings and take a picture of a Mountie.

If you are interested in museums, the new War museum is awesome, the Aviation museum has a great collection of vintage planes, the museum of nature has some great exhibits in a funky old building that looks like a castle, Museum of civilization in Hull(across the river). How much time you got, will you have wheels, etc?
Anyone into metalwork will apppreciate the time and skill it took one man to decorate his house to the extent that when the house was torn down, the facade was preserved as art, and hung on a wall http://www.hypercube.org/photo/photo.cgi/2002.07.30/6/display like the Tin House.

If you have time to venture out of town as well, I would have more than a few suggestions for you. Email me @atemi@rogers.com if you are interested in more to see, might hook up for a refreshing beverage if we can arrange a time.

Could one or more of you offer suggestions as to appropriate cutlery for me to be wearing around town?

My wife and I traveled to Ottawa last summer. It is a lovely city. There is much to see on foot in and around the Parliament area. We saw the changing of the guard there and saw quite a few other things, after gathering tourist information at the welcome center across the street. Not far from there you can walk along the Rideau Canal, too. There's a museum called Canada and the World Pavilion that didn't take long to visit and entertained us thoroughly. There's also the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in which we spent considerable time.

You might also enjoy the Canadian War Museum, though I did not visit it during my time in Canada. We did visit the National Gallery, however.

I was greatly impressed with Ottawa as an aesthetically pleasing and culturally cosmopolitan city. It is well worth a visit. Be careful driving around the city; the streets are a little confusing and no printed map really does them justice, as they defy logic in some of their connections (and disconnects).

As far as cutlery, I went to Ottawa without most of my usual gear, not knowing precisely what the laws are there. I took only a flashlight and a Swiss Army Knife.

The most appropriate cutlery wold of course be something from Wally Hayes
http://www.hayesknives.com/ as he is a local boy. I would be more concerned about bringing a knife into the country, between customs and the airport security folks, they are grabbing a lot of blades. I would hate to have anything be taken from you by zealous border guards or airport security. I would suggest leaving knives at home, the city is very safe anyways.

It isn't that I carry a pocket knife for security but that I carry one just as I carry my keys or a pocket comb. The pocketknife is a useful tool. Besides, with my arthritis, I would be lousy as knife fighter.

If you dont bring anything automatic you should be fine. Try to keep the blade lengths under 4 " and perhaps try to avoid assisted openers too.

No push daggers, switchblades of any kind or butterfly knives either.

I would recommend something the size of a Spyderco Delica, even the Endura would be ok but that may upset someone if your stopped for some reason. A leatherman would also be good in addition to your folder, and a decent flashlight wont cause any problems.

Customs wont give you any grief bringing things into or out of the country, just put them in your checked baggage and not your carry on.

I'll be footloose and fancy free on Friday, 7/22 through Sunday, 7/24. If any of you Knife Knuts in Ottawa should like an excuse to get together with an American Knife Knut, I would be very interested in doing so.

Leaving tomorrow. If Carlton Univ. has any wireless connections that I can use, I'll have my laptop and will try to post from there.

The underground city is in Montreal Quebec, right? I read recently that they had a much smaller underground mall in Ottowa.
