Going to Russia, what to look for?

I'm going to Moscow over spring break, and I'm curious if anybody knows of any knives I should look for there. Anything Russian I could get a better deal on? Anything you need me to snag for you?

A Texan in Russia. That ought to be an interesting experience. They'll probably look at you as a cowboy.

Tell 'em "Howdy Y'all!"

Haha, certainly will! I'm glad I have my little translator girlfriend. I swear, she isn't mail order, she's just Russian :D

Shirogorov will be really hard to find in retail, and the price is not going to be pretty.
Look for Kizlyar (but not Kizlyar Supreme - that are Chinese-made knives: you probably would not want to go to Russia to bring back a Chinese-made product), Cheburkov, Sander.
Kizlyar knives are reasonably priced production knives, Cheburkov is more semi-custom, but still affordable. Sander knives are quite good, sort of hand-made and again well priced.
Essentially you can buy whatever Russian-made knife you like, it will likely be of a reasonable quality. Look for either 95x18 steel (stainless) or x12мф (an equivalent of D2): that can be used as an indication of the quality of a knife itself (besides the price, which sometimes can be misleading).
That's for fixed knives, there will be lots of them and they will be more affordable. There are not that many Russian quality folders, and they will be pricey: essentially Shirogorov and Cheburkov is all that I would consider buying myself.

P.S. And I do not think Shirogorov will be much cheaper in retail there, or cheaper at all! That is if you find it! Do not spend too much time looking for a deal on it, it will be pretty much a waste! Moscow is an expensive place: you will see that.

Well check out what you can find and post up pictures and infos. If it's something that you don't mind picking up for us, we can give you a heads up. I'm quite interested in Russian offerings.

I'll try my best to post as many pictures as I can. I'm not too sure about data roaming charges, though!

Take pictures and post them when you return or only post from an open wifi source...oh yeah...Shirogorov :D

I'd love a greatly appreciate some Russian black tea
,

Should be very inexpensive and my wife and I would be very grateful. Light to pack as well and full reimbursement goes without saying.

Dasvidaniya!

Hell yeah. A Kizlyar KO-2 with the leather handle & the etching or whatever on the huge ricasso. I can find them here & there but without the ricasso etching. It seems like they do it more on the Russian & Ukranian sites that I can't deal with. I'd pay internet prices for one for sure & I'd owe you one. Tell 'em howdy from Texas for me, too.

Learn from the Olympics the pitfalls of using your phone over there.

Remove your banking information from your phone and call back to check your balances, be careful!

You WILL be hacked, no maybes, according to the national news.

Good, she will help you through any negotiations so that you do not get a Chinese made Benchmade. I have not traveled to Russia for about 12 years, but when I did travel there, I found nothing but icons, fur hats and Soviet artifacts. Russian steel was the very best of the Eastern Block countries of the Soviet Union, but it was not stellar by any means. Enjoy your trip and learn what you can about the people and the culture. But if it were me, I would do my knife buying in the U.S. You just do not know what you are getting there.
