I'm heading up north next week to Toronto. What's the story with regards to knife carry? I'd like to take my plain-edge Spyderco Viele. Also, any good knife shops or other "areas of interest
Almost any knife is OK in Canada (no Balisongs, or autos). Your Spydie will be no problem. As far as things to see, I'm from the West coast, but I think that the Hockey Hall of Fame would be a good start. A lot of other things in the same area as well.
When are you coming to our fair city? The Canadian Knifemaker's Guild Show is on April 7th and 8th right next to the airport.
If you are coming at any other time you are welcome to visit my shop, just call for an appointment(to make sure I will be in).
As Steve said almost anything goes except for autos, butterfly knives and push daggers. Just don't say anything if asked if you have any weapons at customs, a pocket knife is just that in Canada unless you declare it or use it as a weapon and only then does it become one.
Thanks for the info guys and George, thanks for the invite. However, I'm sorry to say I'll only be there for 48 hours and don't think I can squeeze in enough time for a visit.
I was in Willowdale, Ontario not too long ago visiting friends and visited Toronto. It's a marvelous city, friendly people and very clean compared to most U.S. cities of the same size. I recommend that you carry a small folder. I am aware that Canadian law feels that there is no reason why the average citizen should arm themselves and you want to make sure that if you run into a local constable, you aren't carrying something that will get you in a heap of trouble.
There have been many posts about Canadian knife laws. They are a little complicated and leave lots of room for interpretation and discretion on the part of an LEO. Search the forum under Criminal Code to see most of them. But George's advice is a good practical way to proceed.
We don't have too many places to see and buy good knives here in Toronto. We've discussed that here too, at length. But you absolutely should call and visit Mr. Tichbourne. Great knifemaker, great guy. Just don't clean him out before I get a chance to see his work at the CKG show
For other makers in the vicinity, check out the CKG website.
Since I went through the Toronto airport about a year ago or so I can say that even if you declare your knives as weapons with customs you will most likely not have a problem. Mine were all small fixed blade customs. I had about 6 or so. The customs folks said they had never seen so many nice knives. Shocked me. They let me go on my merry way with zero problems. I had more of a hassel coming back in to the US at O`hair. Still it was really not bad at all.
