Found a parcel in the mailbox yesterday containing three GoingGear firesteels.
A Wolf and a Badger with firecaps and a Badger without a cap but drilled on one end.
The Wolf is enormous and will look perfect mounted on the side of my Becker Brute's sheath.
The Badger with cap is going into my BOB and the uncapped Badger is tucked in alongside the Leatherman Surge on my belt for edc.
The caps are far larger than I expected but I prefer them this size. A lot of pjcbs will fit inside one.
I didn't get to do a very complete test but I did tear off a 1"x1" piece of cotton napkin and just laid it flat in my ashtray. The capped Badger lit the damn thing with no fluffing of any kind.
Hopefully this weekend I can get out and try them in the woods.
So far, I couldn't be more pleased.

He has some good firesteels, I have the 1/2" by 6" model. What a beast! :)

Haven't gotten the chance to try them outside yet, but I can tell you that if you use your ashtray to test it indoors, not all of the scrapings ignite. So then later when you set your cigar in the ashtray, and then pick it up and light it, it looks like the Fourth of July going off inches from your face. Rather startling at first.
I think I need to improve my scraping technique a bit.

With the goinggear mischmetal rods, you have to scrape hard and fast, otherwise you just scrape off curls. You sacrifice control and aim, but you gain hot globs that'll ignite things a LMF firesteel can't (or as quickly anyway).

One you master the mischmetal rods, it's hard to go back to the LMF type steels IMHO. They will ignite tinder with a greater sucess rate:)

I've got a couple of Hedgehogs en route. Going to fit them with Whitetail sheds handles.
