With most cutleries histories, there is a bit of murkiness as to the beginning dates. A portion of this may be attributed to the length of time a startup takes, but mostly to their desire to claim the earliest date possible to emphasize longevity. Western, for instance, claimed it's origin back in the early days of the Platts cutlery in New England, not when Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing opened in Colorado. Imperial Schrade also used the earliest possible date of 1904 when the Schrade brothers started their company, not post WWII when the Baer brothers bought and consolodated the three companies of Ulster, Schrade, and Imperial. Imperial's start date is often seen as 1917, but I recently acquired a Imperial 50th Anniversary knife upon which the dates are "1916 - 1966". It is 1 1/2" long with a single clip point blade of 1 1/16" long. Both the handle and blade are gold plated, and the front cover has raised text on a textured background. The rear cover, also gold plated, is a flat polished metal piece the is looped at it's end to form a spring tie clasp. This tiny commemorative, aside from being gold plated stem to stern, is fully cutlered and functional. A 1 1/16" blade that walks and talks. Amazing!

It is, Eric. The picture doesn't do it justice. In fact the only thing keeping it from being "mint-in-the-box" is the lack of box. I've not seen one before, or even an advertisement for one. Since it might be considered jewelry, I can imagine it actually coming in a small jewelry gift box. I wonder if I should wear it on my tie the next time I am in court?
