My gold membership expires in a couple days. Can I renew today or do I need to let it expire first? I go through this every year and can never remember. I must be entering dementia.

Let it expire, that way it will be available when you go into Paid Subscriptions. If you go in there now, you'd only see Platinum and higher available.
