Is there any difference in privileges between gold and platinum? All I can tell is higher bit avatar, more personal messaging ability and that's about it.

Both have the same trading / selling ability?

Also I understand bladeforums is not only a forum but a business, however as a consumer I wish to ask a blatant question with no disrespect intended.

Is there any benefit for me ( monetarily ) to sell knives here rather than on EBay? I haven't crunched any numbers, but the way I understand it I can purchase knives here without a membership, so I would be paying to sell.

I'm not sure if the whole eBay fee / PayPal transaction % fee evens out when compared to selling here. I would still pay a PayPal fee when selling here as well. Just trying to figure things out. I understand my question has multiple segments but I would like to clear these things up before proceeding with what method is best for me.

Platinum has a custom user title as well as a bigger avatar and more message storage space, otherwise gold has the same privileges. But, platinum supports the site more than gold does, so often those who hang out long enough here will show their appreciation for the site by upgrading to platinum.

Ebay is more anonymous and has more chance of scamming, I find selling on BF to be quite fulfilling even if the monetary values may balance out. There's more oversight when doing business here, and the buyers have a much lower chance of being dirty.

If you intend to sell more than a mere handful of your knives on an ad hoc basis, without much prior track record of selling on here, it would be more prudent and serving to your purpose to select the Premium membership. Other than that the Gold membership is just as efficient unless you would like to support the site more by selecting the latter. IMHO even if one does not intend to sell on here, they ought to consider paying the $10 for the basic membership to support this business which has established a great platform for knife enthusiasts. Some folks just elect to buy the basic membership not because they are "too cheap" but because they do not wish to be tempted to start selling their knives on here! It is not wise to put yourself in the path of temptation in order to just test your resolve!

Reference eBay:

I have an online based business which is totally unrelated to this hobby and eBay Motors is my main selling platform. That said, when I decide to let go of one of my personal knives, I always use the Exchange on here because to me buying and selling knives has a very strong emotional component to it that this Site's Exchange section caters much better to my criteria on top of which is the faster pace of transactions and the the smoother process of these transactions. While I know that I could potentially get more $ for my personal knives offered for sale, I don't consider or muddle my online business with my hobby so financial gain whilst in theory is a nice factor to consider, is never a forefront factor when dabbling in the hobby. On the other end as the buyer, of course I would like to score a better deal as opposed to paying more for something which I could potentially get for a bit less.

Other than the above, you can not run an auction style of listing on here and there are other very different stylistic differences between these two venues when it comes to hawking your ware, so to speak. Good luck in whatever you decide to choose but become a paid member if you decide to stick around. I am in no way, shape or form affiliated with anyone who owns / operates / moderates this site.

Platinum's worth the extra for the pm space and more memory for media pics, especially if you're not using an image hosting site like Imgur or any of the others. I hafta to admit it was nice to be part of the eeleet :) . I wish I could afford the Pirate level because in the 19 years here and many years before with old guard that came over from the recknivesdotcom days when it was a loose group of hardly moderated knife enthusiasts who liked to hang out in the wee hours of the mornings talkin' about knives and trying to figure out how to include knives in ongoin' dialogs to abide by an unwritten law that said because it was a BBS that had the word knives in it's title we had to mention or include a pic of a knife somewhere.

I remember political arguments, and off topic tangents that became OK because in the middle of a rant about the current state of the union they included a pic of a Gerber Silver Knight. We needed some boundaries, some structure and a place for everyone. Spark and Mike and a few others stepped up to create and then moderate all these people who were used to the wild west style of the early internet. They created a family friendly forum where the environment fostered dialog between the makers and the shakers of the industry with the end user and collector. If you have to ask yourself or anyone else if it's worth it to be a paying member of any rank, you're probably using the forum wrong. ;) :) Than again what do I know, I'm just the old guy whose been here forever, mumbling to himself in the background. ;)

What Ted? I didn't hear you back there...

PM space, larger avatar, and more support for this little corner of the Internet that we like to call home.

Gold is $30 to be able to sell here. eBay charges about 10% so $300 in sales on eBay = a 1 year Gold Membership here.
