Well my son is a month away from turning "3". And it is also his golden birthday. Now as Im sure a lot of you have, I have already built up a stockpile of knives for my under age son. He has his own lock box full of knives he just dosent know it yet. Lots of them are my old users or doubles. But every year for his birthday I put something new and still in the box for him, so when he gets older he will have a little bit of a head start. So for this year I was thinking of giving him some type of a scout knife but not decided yet. ( USA or germany, just no CHINA) I saw the bulldog scout knives and I like them just wish they had a screwdriver insted of a corkscrew. And I can get one for easily under $50 bucks and with some gold flecks in it too ,LOL. Just something a little more significant than usual for the golden birthday thing.

So here is my criteria
1) no china made
2) $50 bucks or less
3) No sak's he already has a few
4) Open to any suggestion not just scout knives, so talk me into something. It just needs to be "Cool" something he can appreciate in 10 years.

My boy is almost 3, and he's had a small knife collection since moments after his birth. Here's what I've picked out for him so far. Maybe you'll get an idea from these:

Mora fixed-blade youth model with wood handles and leather sheath. Finishing the handles and sheath will make a neat father-son project some day.
A youth model Opinel. Like a regular Opinel, but with a rounded tip.

At about age 1, I bought him a toy Victorinox SAK. It was something he could 'use' right away.

This year, age 2, Santa brought him a Case medium stockman with bone handles and CV blades.

My boy loves to look as his very own box of knives (supervised, of course). It fills the minutes when he's not busy looking at da-da's pocketknives or knives on the internet. :D

BOB, you nailed it. He cant get enough, there is always pocket knives laying around, ( out of reach obviously) but he can still see them and he always asks to see them. and now every thing is " pocket nice" LOL. He usually ends up walking away from the dinner table with a butter knife trying to cut up everything he sees till my wife seizes the weapon.- Joel

:thumbup:Now thats not a bad idea, I suppose he is old enough if I come up with a small list and let him choose it might be fun, good call:thumbup::thumbup:

Take him to the hardware store. Our ACE has a display case with a small selection, but wide variety, of pocketknives. A couple each of Buck, Case, Victorinox, Bear, and Gerber - nothing that would unsuitable for a boy's collection.

Shepherd Hills has a printed catalog (Little Bob loves knife catalogs also) with nice photos of Case knives. It might be good for a boy to learn patience, even if it's just three days' waiting for the mailman. ;)

Case Peanut. The size will fit his hand well, and the boxy handle will make it easy to grip and use. Bonus points if you get it in CV. My son is 14 and has used his Peanut for years for whittling chains, ball in cages, general camp chores, etc.
