I junk dealer that I pass on my way to my hunting club usually has a couple of boxes of knives. Sometimes they are pretty decent. He had a Schrade UH Golden Spike that was new in a box (box was torn) for $45.00. It had the sharpening stone in the sheath pouch. I already have one, but my son would like one too, I am sure. Is this a pretty fair price?
I would look to see the country of origin. That's too much for the newer Chinese version:

Just search for Schrade Golden Spike and you will get a lot of hits at around $25.
If it is the old American model, I would buy it because I like it. This was one of my main hunting and camping knives for about 25 years. You can get the knife absolutely
nasty sharp, and its design makes it easy to take apart game. I found it to be a really useful all around knife. As well as a hunter, it is heavy enough to use as a camp knife, and is deceptively useful with its thick blade.
The sheaths are excellent, and easy to maintain. You can toss (or keep) the rough stone that comes with the knife and get a fine stone to use.
My
only niggle would be that the handle is a bit small. But in your case, giving it to your boy just might fill the bill comfortably.
The only advantage I could see to the new Taylor model would be that it is some kind of stainless steel, and depending on how well your boy takes care of his knife, that could be of some benefit. The American model will most likely be carbon steel.
To me, the American model for $45 is a steal.
