Hey Bladeforums, thinking about picking up a Chinook 4, just wondering how Spyderco's S30V out of Japan compares to that from Golden, Colorado.

Also any feedback on the Chinook from owners would be great

Posted this in the spyderco section first, but didnt get too many responses so i thought i'd try to post it here. Thanks

S30V is just a steel made from a certain variety of elements. It is all the same no where it is made (unless it is being counterfeited and they who knows what kind of steel it it). Any differences in a S30V blade are dependent on how it is heat treated, blade grind, etc.

Get the knife if you like the style. It will be great and I'm sure you will be satisfied. After all it is a Spyderco and they have been in business longer than most knife manufacturers and have a good reputation for making knives that cut well.

AFAIK, S30V is only made by Crucible in the US, and the S30V used in knives made in Japan (as well as in Taiwan) is sent there from the US. So it’s the same steel.

Doesn't matter if it's the same steel. What matters is the heat treatment on the steel at either facility.

Thankfully, from what I can recall, Spyderco's foreign manufacturer's do a good job on heat treating S30V to the tolerances requested by Spyderco, and it should be in line with the same steel heat treated in Golden.

Yup, the heat treat seems to be the crux of the question. I can't speak to the Seki vs Golden since I don't own a knife from either, but their Taiwanese Manufacturer makes excellent knives in S30V. My Ikuchi in S30V performs as well as or maybe even slightly better than S30V I have from other U.S. manufacturers.

Bottom line, Spyderco is a quality manufacturer who manages their supply chain quality very well, so I wouldn't question the quality of a blade with a spyder next to a hole.
