Is it possible to get a good set of beginner's golf clubs for $400-500? My brother is getting married next month and he mentioned that he wants a set of clubs for a wedding present.

For $500, I would buy used clubs and polish them up. Check your area for a golf "pawn" shop, good deals can usually be had there.

But clubs are like knives so it has to fit the person as well as be aestheticly pleasing.

Look for "cavity back," irons and the biggest driver heads(460cc max). Depending on how athletic your brother is, he should have a "regular" flex shaft or maybe "senior" flex to start out with. Always look for the word FORGIVING.

Also try to get him some accessories: tees, ball markers, pitch mark repair tool, etc.

I recommend a used set as well. I picked up a nice set of Titleist clubs from a pro shop in town. Open back will by far give the most forgiveness, and there is no real substitute for quality.

What you might want to do is give him a gift certificate to the pro shop and let him try the clubs so the fit is what he is looking for. Too long of a shaft or too short and it can cause serious problems with your game.

Good Luck.

I may suggest taking him for custom built clubs. They're not brand name per se (like Taylor Made, Callaway, Nike, etc.) but they are components assembled for the perfect fit. The club builder should measure his height how far his wrists are of the ground, his hand size and how fast he swings the club. I had to have clubs made for me, the shafts are an inch and a half longer with jumbo grips, and they cost a lot less then off the shelf brand names. Pick up a used driver or even last years model; you can save a ton of money that way also.

Look on ebay for previously played balls, you can get them at half price and some of them look like they have never been hit. I've had good results from Knetgolf.

Ask a local club pro if they have used clubs. Guys that are into golf buy new clubs all the time, even when their older models are just fine and a lot better than anything you will find in a discount store.
