Golok size??

I've been looking a lot at the BRKT Golok lately.
I'm normally an axe kind of guy, but I'm going for holidays where a golok or machete or the likes would be the better choice.
That's my excuse to get one anyway... :D

Without having seen one in real life, I like the BRKT Golok for several reasons:
- The handle seems to be of a good shape
- The steel appears to be of a high quality
- BRKT in general has a good reputation here at the forums, and their Golok mainly gets very good rep too.

My only questionmark is really the size of the blade.
According to BRKTs homepage, the golok blade length is 11 inches.
Is this long enough for a chopper/bush slicer?
I always though of such knives to be in the range of maybe (blade length) 15 inches.
But as said, being an axe kind of guy, I never owned one, so I don't really know.

What is your opinion about this?

I have a BRKT Golok, it is a very nice size. Very well proportioned handle to blade length. The overall look of the knife seems small but when you start to chop, the knife performs like a much larger blade. The comfortable handle is definatly a plus - no hot spots at all. Good luck finding one!

I have a golok made of spring steel with a blade length of 15.75" with a full convex edge. This is actually a razor on steroids! I also have another one with a 9.5" blade also with a full convex edge. This too is extremely sharp! This one though has a much broader blade. Both can chop very well. So, I believe that you won't have a performance-related problem just because the blade length of the golok you are pondering of buying is 11".

If you would like to do some reading about the two goloks that I have I suggest you use this link http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/valiant1.html. I hope you find its contents interesting.

I want one, but I'd have to save for a while, and they can't be found. So I'll just drool over pics. Did you guys see the custom sheath Leatherman did for Ted's???

I have the BRK&T Golok. Overall I like it. The thickness of the blade is 1/4" by 1" wide. The handle is 5 1/2". I would prefer it to be 5". The edge is alittle thinner then I like for this size knife.

Thanks for the link, g moutafis!!
That's really interesting read. I might just have to try out a Valiant.
Even if it would turn out I don't like it, the price would still not kill me.

I have a 12 inch Valiantco golok and it is an awesome tool. Certainly "long enough for a chopper/bush slicer" - but if you were really actually bush-whacking through jungle you might want something longer. A longer golok/machete prevents you having to bend over and over again to slice through brush at the base of the plant.

The BRKT Golok is an excellent tool. I also thought it was a little small when I first picked it up, but that thing is a real workhorse! And the handle is an excellent working handle - like said above, no hot spots.

BRKT is planning on making another run before too long - you might have to wait until then to get one. But if you can find one now, buy it - you won't regret it!

At the risk of seeming like a Shill-
for "... a chopper/bush slicer"
you might consider the Martindale No2 or The Ranger Knives Mach~Axe No3. They're 13" bladed, which I feel is the right minimum length to be a useful clearing tool. Both these recommendations are weight forward so that they make excellent choppers as well. Since I haven't been able to reach BRK&T I can't get one of thiers to review.
