Anyone try using Golok's for survival use? I really like that Bark River but wonder if it would work for me up here in Oregon. I usually use a saw or a hatchet but the Golok is...well it's cooler.:D

I am thinking the exact same thing my friend. Lighter, more handy,= more cooler.

The BRKT Golok would work just fine in Oregon. It's the best batoning blade I've ever used, and would be a nice thing to have with you when trying to split out some dry interior wood.

However, beware of internet stores offering it for sale: The Golok has been completely sold out for some time, and the only way of getting one right now is through a private sale. Internet stores that are advertizing them do not have them in stock, and will not have them until Mike makes more later this year.

Good hunting!

I've got a Valiant Survival Golok. Its too pretty for me to beat up.

I got 4 of these, and plan to do a mod project rehandling them and changing the shape of the handle area too.

Will you post pictures of your projects on this forum?
And, do you really need 4 or would you be interested in "loosing" one of them?

I am not interested in loosing one of them before the mod. After the mod, two of them will be for sale.

I added pics of the projects this AM.

Here's a golok a friend made for me... :D

Man thats sweet. What is the handle made of?

I have an SAS issue golok that I like a lot. I cut the issue Delrin buckle off the scabbard and added a carbiner. There are two belt loops.

Martindale has made a version (a couple inches larger than the SAS model-- 13" blade vs. 11"), but it seems difficult to find them in the US. There was a thread a while back that had this link: http://www.loink.com/product/888/39

I don't even want to get started here-- they should have a link to credit and marriage counselors :D http://www.valiantco.com/java1.html

I have several different goloks- native made and Martindales. I just used one to cut 20 poles for a class.

Could we get some specs on that bad boy and who the maker is? Also how well does it swing and cut?

Actually, this one belongs to my in law, but an exact duplicate is in the works for me. I borrowed it one weekend during a hunting trip, it handled and cut exceptionally well. The balance was just great. That particular one was made for a right hand user.

The hand forged blade is made of three slabs of steel sandwiched together about 6mm thick and 26cm long. My friend’s name is Ko Siang, a son of a very famous local bladesmith, the late Mpek Ubin. His family is descended from a line of bladesmiths dating back a couple hundred of years ago, when his great great grandfather was first brought to Java from the mainland China to equip, arm and train the armies of the Kingdom of Banten (West Java). In a particular war against the Dutch, the kingdom fell, people were scattered, and Mpek Ubin and his family settled in the area which is now called Jonggol (West Java). He was the sole reason why the blades of Jonggol are famous for, at least around here…. :)
